 Energy

Energy Management

The type of energy we use and how we use it will shape our future. All organisations have a role to play in minimising energy use and considering alternative sources of energy such as wind and solar energy.

At UB, we are utilising a great amount of energy to keep our buildings lit and warm and our computers, printers, photocopiers and electrical appliance going. UB is committed to a sustainable future and reducing our energy use is an important step in creating that future.

Why is Energy Management Important?

For a succinct explanation visit the Sustainability Victoria Website via the link below to see their new ‘Black Balloon‘ campaign-
You Have the Power- Save Energy

Global warming and climate change are now key environmental issues. How the world responds to these serious challenges will affect future generations and the future of our environment.

Energy demand in Australia is growing rapidly. Even though Australia has a range of abundant renewable resources such as hydro, wind, solar and geothermal, only a relatively small proportion of Australia‘s energy is from these renewable sources. As a result of our current reliance on fossil fuels for energy, Australia‘s per capita greenhouse pollution is amongst the highest in the world. The gas and electricity sectors account for 48% of Australia‘s greenhouse pollution.

The Victorian Government has recognised the need for organisations to reduce their energy usage and has set a target of 15% energy reduction for all government buildings including all TAFE institutions. A number of changes have already been made to our energy systems and it is now time for our staff and students to make changes of their own.

Physical Resources

UB‘s Physical Resources team has answered the call of the Federal Government to reduce energy consumption and has saved 43.79 tonnes of Greenhouse Gases (GHG) being released into the atmosphere. The changes being implemented at UB‘s SMB campus will be used as a model of what saving can be achieved on all other UB campuses.

Switch Off

Switch Off is a program designed to empower UB staff to take the future of the organisation into their own hands. Green Office Champions will be recruited to undergo training and develop action plans to reduce the amount of energy produced in their office, school or section.

 Waste and Recycling

UB‘s Waste Challenge

Australia comes second only to America when it comes to waste production per capita- scary huh?! It's time to do something more through the UB Recycling Program.

Over the past 12 months we have got a great deal of feedback from staff and students about providing recycling facilities and we will soon be able to offer this service but we need your help to make it a success.

Look around the campus and you will soon see yellow topped bins standing next to the ordinary rubbish bins. These will be our new co-mingled recycling bins. All recyclable materials can go into these bins, diverting large proportions of our waste from landfill.

In our office areas there will also be Paper Only recycling bins for the large percentage of clean office paper thrown out every year. This is now a valuable resource that is reprocessed to make many new products.

Our Three- Bin System

We have opted for a three-bin system

  • Waste to Landfill - these bins are red

  • Paper Recycling - these bins have blue lids and blue signage

  • Mixed Recycling - these bins have yellow lids and yellow signage

Did you Know?

One tonne of recycled paper or cardboard saves:

  • Approximately 13 trees

  • 2.5 Barrels of oil

  • 4100 KWH of electricity

  • 4 cubic metres of landfill

  • 31,780 litres of water

In all office areas you will find a Paper Recycling bin with a blue lid. Each staff member will be responsible for emptying their personal paper waste into these bins.

At Mt Helen, SMB and Camp Street Campuses you will find recycling ‘stations‘ in outside areas, consisting of a Waste to Landfill bin and a Mixed Recycling bin. The Mixed Recycling bin will be marked with a yellow triangle and will have yellow signage on it.

At Mt Helen and Camp Street Campuses, you will find a Mixed Recycling bin with a yellow lid in all office areas. Each staff member will be responsible for emptying their personal and kitchen recyclable waste into this bin. Students will also utilise this building to dispose of their drink bottles, cans and any paper.

At SMB Campus, there will be mixed recycling ‘bays‘ outside of the buildings. These bins will be located at various points across campus. Each staff member will be responsible for emptying their personal and kitchen recyclable waste into this bin. For locations please open this map- SMB Mixed Recycling Location Map.

Cartridge recycling is available for all campuses and is done through Planet Ark. To recycle your photocopier, printer and fax toner cartridges, simply post them to the National Centre for Sustainability at SMB Campus or drop them in the box at all libraries.

Keeping an Eye on our Waste

The National Centre for Sustainability is regularly auditing our waste to determine the total quantity of waste we are producing, the major waste streams and identifying key areas for improvement. Quantities measured before the recycling program began in the office environment, indicated that between 80-90% of our waste is one sided office paper. Clearly this is a fantastic opportunity to significantly reduce our waste by initially reusing one-sided office paper and then recycling it when it can no longer be used. For confidential paper that cannot be reused, confidential paper bins will be made available (some are already available in certain areas).

Separately we can continue to recycle our printer cartridges through Cart Collect. All you need to do is send your spent printer and photocopier cartridges to the NCS Office at SMB Campus.

Champions Program

Champions are those people who want to contribute positively to the sustainable future of UB by actively supporting Recycling @ UB. The role of the Recycling Champions is to assist with the roll-out of the program and monitor how it is working so that we can modify it if necessary. Specifically that will mean;

  • providing input into the recycling program

  • assisting with installation of  recycling boxes and recycling signs near bins

  • being a point of contact for people in each area to answer questions, gather feedback and provide feedback to the NCS on the recycling program

  • auditing of the recycling program on a monthly basis

 Water

In 2007, UB's staff and students saved over 18 million litres of water through improved consumption methods. The savings were made by installing aqua locks in accommodation showers, placing 3 minute shower timers in change rooms, and efficient urinals have recently been installed saving 96% in water use.

At UB we're still not satisfied and we're working harder to make more savings. A water consultant will be appointed to make recommendations for every campus. Recommendations will include harvesting rainwater from roofs and collecting storm water for toilet use. If you have any suggestions, please contact Sustainability Officer, Dale Boucher on ph 5327 8414 or email d.boucher@ballarat.edu.au.

  Transport

Sustainable Transport @ UB

Have you ever considered the impact the way you travel makes to the environment, your health and your back pocket?

Why not travel more sustainably to work- walk, cycle or catch a bus or train. Not only will you be reducing car emissions, traffic congestion and stress, you will be improving your health, fitness and happiness at the same time. Incidental exercise, through active transport (cycling or walking), is a great way to stay fit and healthy without really trying.

If that doesn‘t convince you, have you seen the cost of petrol lately? Sustainable transport is a cheaper, cleaner option.

To start, take the Sustainable Transport @ UB Challenge- walk, cycle or catch a bus or train to work once a week.

Click on the link to view the comparative costs for different size vehicles in the UB Fleet.

 UB BUG

Have you got the BUG? The cycling bug that is.
It's never too late to start!

The National Centre for Sustainability has put together the first UB Bicycle Users Group (BUG) for all UB Staff who love to get out and ride, who make their way to work on their bike or who would like to ride more. Already we have over 50 UB staff signed up to the UB BUG.

UB BUG brings bike riders together, creates opportunities for people of any level to ride together and keeps you fit and healthy. UB BUG will also identify opportunities to improve bike facilities on all campuses, to encourage more people to ride and make it easier for those who already do.

UB BUG will be holding various rides throughout the 2006, across all campuses and everyone is invited. All you need to do is register with us to get regular updates of UB BUG rides. The rides will vary in distance and difficulty so everybody is encouraged to join up, no matter what level!

If anybody has rides they would like to let other BUGs know about, whether it is an organised event or a bunch ride during the week, please let us know so that we can distribute to members and post on our calendar (below).

Register

To register, email your name, contact phone number and campus and we will send you updates of any UB BUG rides. For more information, contact Sustainability Officer,  on 5327 8414 or sustainability@ballarat.edu.au
