What is RPL/RCC? (Recognition of Prior Learning / Recognition of Current Competency)
RPL/RCC is the formal acknowledgment of skills / knowledge/competencies
already obtained through:
Formal Training
Study Work Experience
Life Experience
RPL/RCC assesses a student's prior learning against the competencies or learning
outcomes of the particular course/unit in which the student is enrolled/interested
in enrolling.
Why apply? - What's in it for you?
It is important to apply for RPL/RCC if you think your previous study and/or
experiences might be relevant to the unit/s in which you are enrolling.
The advantages of a successful application are:
You won't have to undertake units in which your
competencies have been recognised.
You may complete your course more quickly.
What does RPL/RCC involve?
Credit Transfers/Standard Exemption
Credit Transfer:
Where evidence is provided by the student that the identical unit/module of
competency has previously been studied with another registered provider or in
another course at me University of Ballarat.
Standard Exemptions:
Where evidence is provided that the student has completed similar studies or
has specified life experience that has been formally recognised by the Board
of Technical Studies (against a particular unit) and included on the Standard
Exemption Register.
How do you apply?
Enrol in the course for the current year but not in the unit/module that credit
is being claimed for.
Complete an 'Application for RPL/RCC Credit Transfer and/or Standard Exemption'
form.
Submit your application to the School representative.
Evidence will then be assessed by your Course Coordinator/Assessor, and
you will be advised of the outcome.
Fees
No fees apply to Credit Transfers or Standard Exemption.
Non-Standard Exemptions
Exemptions based on similar studies and or work/life experience assessed by
the relevant School as being equivalent.
How do you apply?
Enrol in the course, including the units/modules you are applying for RPL/RCC
in.
Contact the relevant school to obtain unit/module outlines and advice regarding
documentation of evidence.
Schools may schedule a brief interview or a information session to discuss
the process for collecting evidence to support your application for RPL/RCC.
Collect all the evidence to support your application. Remember you must
demonstrate competence in all the elements and performance criteria in order
to receive recognition for a unit of competence. It is your responsibility
to collect this evidence and arrange it in a logical sequence which will be
easy for the school representative to assess.
Complete an "Application for RPL/RCC - Non-Standard / Exemption"
form and attach relevant supporting documentation and evidence.
Submit your application to the nominated school assessor within two weeks
of attending your information session or interview.
Evidence will then be evaluated by the nominated school/assessor, and you
will be advised of the outcome within 2 weeks of submitting your application.
Fees
Students must enrol in the unit/module in which they are seeking a non-standard
exemption and pay the enrolment, amenities and materials fee. Material fees
and student amenities fees may be refunded if applicable.
Types of Assessment
RPL/RCC may be granted where skills / knowledge / competencies have been gained
through means other than formal study perhaps through paid or unpaid work experience,
life experience or informal courses. The means of assessment will vary according
to the nature of the skills / competencies involved, but will generally comprise
one or more of the following examples of evidence:
Examples of Evidence
Statement of Results and Course Outlines for courses you have completed
recently (timeframe to be discussed with school representative).
Position description for current jobs or positions you hold.
Reports from your workplace supervisor on your skills and knowledge. Reports
or relevant workplace documents you have written.
Certificate of Participation in short courses or professional development
activities.
Correspondence with clients.
Appraisals you have completed.
Minutes of meetings you have participated in.
Witness, testimonies, etc.
