  About Employability Skills

From 2006 employability skills have been progressively replacing the Key Competency information in Training Packages.

Employability skills are now embedded in Training Package qualifications and units of competency, and must be integrated within delivery and assessment. Employability skills are non-technical skills which play a significant part in contributing to an individual's effective and successful participation in the workplace. In Australia employability skills are defined as:

… the skills required not only to gain employment or establish an enterprise, but also to progress within an enterprise or expand employment capability, so as to achieve one's potential and contribute successfully to enterprise strategic directions.
(Employability Skills for the Future’ (DEST 2002), prepared by ACCI and BCA)

In Australia the employability skills are:

  • communication skills, which contribute to productive and harmonious relations between employees and customers

  • teamwork skills, which contribute to productive working relationships and outcomes

  • problem-solving skills, which contribute to productive outcomes

  • initiative and enterprise skills, which contribute to innovative outcomes

  • planning and organising skills, which contribute to long-term and short-term strategic planning

  • self-management skills, which contribute to employee satisfaction and growth

  • learning skills, which contribute to ongoing improvement and expansion in employee and company operations and outcomes

  • technology skills, which contribute to effective execution of tasks

At the University of Ballarat we have included sustainability as an employability skill.

  Employability Skills Summaries

Employability skills: Describe non-technical skills and competencies which play a significant part in contributing to an individual’s effective and successful participation in the workplace.

Facets: Provide specific examples of skills and behaviours which contribute to the overall understanding of each employability skill. They are the aspects of the skill employers identify as important. . The nature and application of these facets will vary depending on industry, job type and qualification level.

Employability Skills Framework: Employability skills and their facets form an Employability Skills Framework. Facets will be identified in the training package for each qualification, in the Employability Skills Summary.

Employability Skills Summary: Employability Skills Summaries are being written for each training package qualification. They capture the key facets of the employability skills that are important to the job roles covered by the qualification.

Summaries are designed to assist teachers to identify and include the important industry aspects of employability skills in learning and assessment strategies.

Students should be aware of the Employability Skills Summary for their qualification. DEEWR has developed a national website where Summaries can be downloaded. From July 2008 all students receiving Training Package Qualifications should be made aware of this website. From 1 January 2009 the following link will be include on all testamurs for training package qualifications: http://employabilityskills.training.com.au/index.php

Teachers should use the Employability Skills Summaries to:

  • identify how each skill is applicable to the job roles covered by the qualification.
  • assist in developing teaching and assessment strategies
  • assist students to understand industry and workplace expectations
  • help students gather evidence of their employability skills

Remember that the Employability Skills Summaries are not exhaustive lists of qualification requirements or assessment checklists of performance. As employability skills are now embedded into units of competency, the summary should help inform the delivery and assessment strategy for the unit and/ or qualification.
