The Short Course in Building Thermal Performance Assessment (Residential), (FirstRate5) was developed by the Nationwide House Energy Rating Scheme (NatHERS) National Administrator to address the skills and knowledge required by HERS assessors using second generation assessment software within different climates and regulatory frameworks throughout Australia. This training is intended to meet the needs of regulators, HER assessors and the design and construction industry in Victoria. It represents a significant increase in the level of skill and knowledge required by HER assessors and is intended to enable improved ability to achieve homes with five-star, or better, performance in a practical, cost-effective way. FirstRate5 Software includes the AccuRate calculation engine plus a host of new features.

Course Units: 
Module 1: Design & Construction Theory 
Module 2: Software Operation (FirstRate5) 
Module 3: Professional Practice

The course will be run by University of Ballarat -Specialist Centre - Building, Construction & Design

- Participants should have the ability to read and interpret plans and specifications
- Use basic computer technology 
- Have knowledge relating to basic principles of how buildings are constructed 
- Current qualifications relating to the construction, design or certification of residential buildings OR demonstrated experience in working with builders.

The course is 4 days duration and will be offered in various formats in 2009 such as 4 consecutive days, 2 x 2 days or 1 day/week over 4 weeks.

Scheduled dates for SMB Campus.

Courses are scheduled for:-

Ballarat - Jan 12th - 15th (4 consecutive days) - UBTAFE SMB Campus
Ballarat - Jan 19th/20th and 27th/28th. ( 2 x 2 days)  - UBTAFE SMB Campus
Ballarat - Feb 16th/23rd/30th and Mar 2nd. (4 consecutive Mondays) - UBTAFE SMB Campus

Home Sustainability Assessors Training Program


Developed to help householders become Resource smart and reduce their environmental impact.

The Course 

The Course in Home Sustainability Assessment (Course Code: 21854VIC) is an 80 hour course.

Course Structure 

Homes Sustainability Assessors require a broad range of skills and knowledge with a strong emphasis on customer service and practical advice.

The course has been designed to provide training in home sustainability assessments and to guide householders towards informed decisions about living in a more sustainable way.

Course participants will be trained to:

  • Identify customer needs
  • Develop an assessment plan
  • Prepare for house sustainability assessment
  • Evaluate energy and water consumption 
  • Evaluate options for waste management
  • Evaluate gardens and environs 
  • Provide specific advice and deliver an effective service to customers 
  • Practice occupational health an safety in the workplace and follow workplace procedures for hazard identification and risk control

An accreditation system is currently under development for participants who complete the course to be recognised and granted formal accreditation as a Home sustainability Assessor.

The Course commences on Monday Nov 3rd 2008 and will run over 4 consecutive Mondays/Tuesdays as follows :- Nov. 3rd/4th, Nov. 10th/11th, Nov. 17th/18th and Nov. 24th/25th.
