About WorldSkills

WorldSkills is a unique, not for profit, international membership organisation. Its mission is to raise the status and standards of vocational skills and training world-wide in an innovative and forward looking way.

WorldSkills Australia is an organisation that conducts skill competitions in over 52 trade and skill areas.

Established in 1982 WorldSkills Australia has helped thousands of young Australians improve themselves through challenging competitions.

Every two years WorldSkills Australia conducts Regional and National competitions. Regional competitions are held all over Australia in 29 regions. These competitions are usually held at TAFE and other educational or industry institutions.

Winners from each Region form a regional team and progress onto the National competition. National competitions are held in host cities, such as Melbourne in 2006 and Sydney in 2008.

Regional Committee

There would not be WorldSkills competitions within the region without the continued effort and skill of a WorldSkills Committee.

The following people have shown leadership, dedication and volunteered many hours of their own time to support these worthy competitions.

WorldSkills at UB TAFE

Teachers

At UB TAFE we proudly recognise the effort and dedication of our teachers and workplace assessors in relation to the organisation of WorldSkills Regional competitions and the training of the competitors.

"We found WorldSkills a very worthwhile program for our students. They really worked together on the day and educationally it was great for the students to have a short - 1 day deadline for their graphic design work. The 2 students from Diploma of Arts - Graphic Arts who competed in the nationals in Brisbane came back full of praise for the competition and for the University for giving them the opportunity. They both found it both motivating and educational. We'd love to be involved in the future." Gavin Nash, Arts Academy

Message from the Deputy Vice Chancellor

Worldskills is a fantastic opportunity to showcase the skills of our Apprentices and Trainees as they compete against their peers locally, nationally and internationally.

Worldskills challenges young people, their teachers, trainers and employers to achieve world class standards in the workplace and to promote the status of vocational education and training across Australia.

UB TAFE Apprentices and Trainees have competed in every national competition since 1981 and have been very successful winning eight National Gold Medals and one International Gold. UB TAFE representatives have travelled to Switzerland to three competitions, Japan, France and Canada to represent Australia. Peter Bailey won the Gold Medal for Welding in 1997 in Switzerland.

In 2005 Daniel Collings represented Australia in Helsinki in Automotive Mechanics.

This success reflects the quality training given to Apprentices and Trainees by the hard working staff of the UB TAFE.

Our staff have also been rewarded by being chosen as judges in National Competitions. For the first time we had an international judge with Grant Petch being appointed as the Australian Expert in Auto Mechanics at the Helsinki competition in June 2005.

I encourage Apprentices and Trainees to take up the Worldskills Challenge and wish everyone who participates, success.
