Whether you are a student or prospective student, a staff member, a member of the broader community or from the business sector, this website will provide you with information about the TAFE Portfolio and the very diverse range of courses and services it provides.

The TAFE Portfolio includes 4 Schools - Applied Sciences, Business Services, Human Services and Manufacturing Services, which offer courses from Certificate I to Advanced Diploma levels, including an extensive range of Apprenticeship programs and more recently a number of Degree level courses. The dual sector (higher education and TAFE combined) Arts Academy also offers TAFE courses.

The newly established Technical Education Centre (UBTec) provides exciting opportunities for young people to obtain their Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL), a senior secondary school qualification which includes a large technical or vocational component.

The TAFE Portfolio is headquartered at the SMB campus and also conducts courses at the Horsham, Stawell, Ararat campuses and at the Mt Rowan and Gillies St sites and at the Arts Academy Camp St campus in Ballarat. A considerable amount of training is also provided at both industry and community locations. The TAFE portfolio is also responsible for Corrections Education programs at the Langi Kal Kal and Ararat prisons.

Extensive engagement with secondary schools, businesses and community organisations is a feature of the TAFE Portfolio. Strong partnerships exist with many secondary schools in Ballarat and the western region including for the delivery of a wide range of Vocational Education and Training in Schools (VETiS) programs. The TAFE schools also provide an extensive range of customised vocational training and associated services to both business and community organisations in the region and beyond which plays an important part in building the region’s skill base and supporting local industry.

All TAFE students have access to the full range of University support services including counselling, learning support and recreational facilities. An apprenticeship liaison officer and aboriginal education support is provided by the TAFE portfolio.

The quality of learning and teaching provided is very important in the TAFE Portfolio. Student centred learning and flexible learning including the expanded use of ‘e’ learning in campus based, the workplace and other settings is a priority. TAFE students have won many major industry awards for excellence including the Victorian Apprentice of the Year Award in 2006 and 2007.

The TAFE Development Unit provides support for the teaching staff of the TAFE Portfolio by facilitating an extensive professional development program and by providing important teaching support services to ensure staff have the opportunity to maintain and expand their skills, knowledge and industry expertise.

We hope that you find the information provided is informative and helpful. Please contact us if you would like additional information about any of the TAFE Portfolio’s activities.
