In the case of an emergency, if the Physical Resources office cannot be contacted, the main switchboard can be contacted on extension 4 and the message will be forwarded to the appropriate Physical Resources staff immediately. The main switchboard is attended from the hours of 8:30 a.m. to 5.00 p.m.
For 24 hour assistance, dial *6333 from a University phone, this will connect to the University Security Service. Alternatively, you can also dial 5327 9088. Security will either attend to the issue or contact the appropriate Physical Resources staff. For emergencies requiring police, ambulance or fire service attendance dial 000.
Many buildings are fitted with automated alarm systems, in which case Physical Resources and the fire brigade will be automatically notified and a number of trucks dispatched. During office hours Physical Resources staff will attend the alarm. The fire alarm bells for the appropriate building will sound and this will be followed a short time later by a tone and a pre-recorded message instructing people to evacuate the building. All people in the building must evacuate when the instructions are broadcast or when instructed to evacuate by the Campus or Area warden. In buildings where automatic alarm systems are not fitted, Area Wardens will issue instructions to evacuate as required. For further information regarding the evacuation of buildings contact the Occupational Health and Safety Manager.
In the case of a false alarm, Physical Resources and the appropriate warden will investigate the fire alarm and if it is determined that no fire exists the evacuation system will be isolated prior to the evacuation message being broadcast if possible. The fire brigade will still attend once a smoke or fire detector is triggered. Remember, it can be more than a bit embarrassing to find a dozen firemen descending on the staff room after overdoing the toasted sandwiches for lunch, so make sure you have lots of vegemite to go around!
After hours the fire brigade will attend and investigate the alarm.
All staff and students normally located at the Mt Helen Campus are urged to study the Mt Helen campus emergency bushfire plan (doc, 32kb).
