UB Library is committed to the development of best practice spaces that reflect the changing research, study and learning preferences of our students. Underpinning this approach is the need to provide point-of-need assistance and support via a Learning Commons model utilising library and ICT staff and ICT rovers. Refurbishment of the Mt Helen Campus library was completed in April 2010. Work on the SMB Campus library commenced in April 2011 and has now been completed.

The SMB refurbishment saw the Library extended to include the whole of the Tippet Building floorspace. Incorporated into the refurbished SMB Campus library was an expanded Learning Commons area, group and individual study spaces, training room and improved work spaces for staff including the SMB loans, Information Literacy and Information Resources Management teams and the Student Learning Support teacher.
An exhaustive planning process included consultation with a range of staff. Comments and feedback from students and staff via Library Client Surveys and online feedback informed much of the planning work.
Project Control Groups were formed to lead both projects and included the Director, Library Services, Director ICT Services, campus library managers and the Physical Resources Project Manager.
