Internet Commerce Security Laboratory (ICSL)
Group Leader: Associate Professor Paul Watters
The ICSL was established by the University of Ballarat, through CIAO, together with IBM Australia, Westpac Banking Corporation and the Government of Victoria. It was officially opened by the Honourable Theo Theophanus on 14 May 2008.
Focus
ICSL focuses on solutions for more effective management of customer identity, and address critical Internet security issues for the financial sector. Research outcomes will have national and international significance.
The objectives of the ICSL are to:
- Address commercially-relevant security issues affecting the continued uptake of Internet commerce.
- Focus on research into fraud and associated illegal activity in the Internet commerce sector.
- Enhance the knowledge and tools available for the development of simple, safe and secure environments to support the continued uptake of Internet commerce and identity management.
- Build a State and National capability to tackle security problems in Internet commerce through highly-trained ICT graduates.
Capability
ICSL will produce outcomes which have commercial value to businesses, value in broad economic terms, national strategic value, and value to consumers and the community. It can provide expertise in the areas of:
- Forensic imaging
- Threat profiling
- Public key infrastructure (PKI) improvement
- Malware profiling
- Fraud detection systems
- Identity theft advisory
- Recovery services and end user communication and awareness

ICSL seeks to form collaborative partnerships within industry, government bodies and other community organizations. Examples of existing relationships include:
