ICOTA6---------------- A.Rubinov

ICOTA6 (International Conference on Optimization  Techniques and Applications was held at University of Ballarat (Australia) from December 9 til December 11.

The first five conferences in ICOTA series were held in Singapore (1987 and 1992), Chengdu (1995), Perth (1998), and Hong Kong (2001).

ICOTA 6 is the largest ICOTA so far: 254 delegates from 31 countries from Australia, Asia, Europe, North and South America attended the conference.   There are more than 90 delegates from Australia, more than 50 delegates from mainland China, more then 30 delegates from Japan and many delegates from other countries of the  Pacific Rim: Singapore, Taiwan, China(Hong Kong), New Zealand.

The technical program features 2 keynote lectures, 8 invited lectures and 235 presentations. The proceedings volume contains 122 refereed papers and is distributed to delegates on a CD-ROM.

Keynote and invited lectures will be given by world leaders in various branches of optimization and its applications.

Four pre-conference workshops/tutorials were held on December 8 .

International Research Experience in Optimization for U.S. Undergraduates ---------------- Sergiy Butenko

An undergraduate student Workshop on Discrete and Nondifferentiable Optimization: Algorithms and Applications will be held in Glushkov Institute of Cybernetics, Kiev, Ukraine on May 14-31, 2005. ĘThis event is a part of the National Academies' International Research Experience for Undergraduates (INTREU) program and is sponsored by the National Academy of Sciences and the National Science Foundation. All expenses of five selected students will be covered. In addition, a modest stipend will be provided. U.S. undergraduate students majoring in areas related to optimization (engineering, computer science, mathematics, operations research, etc.) are eligible to apply. All student participants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Nominations and applications of qualified undergraduate students are being accepted by Dr. Sergiy Butenko, Texas A&M University, College Station, TX 77843-3131, phone: (979) 458-1089, email: butenko@tamu.edu. More information can be found at http://ie.tamu.edu/people/faculty/butenko/INTREUAnnouncement.pdf.

A New book: "Optimization Theory and Methods" ----------------- Wenyu Sun

The book "Optimization Theory and Methods" written by Ya-xiang Yuan and Wenyu Sun has been published recently by Springer. Optimization is a subject that is widely and increasingly used in science, engineering, economics, management, industry, and other areas.

This book systematically introduces optimization theory and methods, contains a lot of recent research results on nonlinear programming, discusses in detail optimality conditions, and develops computational methods for unconstrained, constrained, and non-smooth optimization. In each chapter, the methods and algorithms are motivated and derived, and then stated step by step. The theoretical results, especially, optimality conditions, global and local convergence are established in a rigorous way. The numerical performance for various algorithms are discussed.

This book can be considered  as a textbook or reference for graduate-level courses in optimization. It is also useful for reference for optimization researchers and engineers.

2nd Australia-China Workshop on Optimization ---------------- L. Caccetta and A. Rubinov

The second Australia-China workshop on Optimization: Theory, Methods and Applications was held in Ballarat  (Australia) on Dec 12 –Dec 13. It brings together many leading experts from both countries, who attend the ICOTA conference. This workshop was organized by University of Ballarat through its Centre for Informatics and Applied Optimization and Curtin University through Western Australian Centre of Excellence in Industrial Optimization. The workshop was supported by the Australian Government. The program of the workshop contained two key-note lectures and 13 invited lectures. Key-note lectures were given by Prof. Alexander Shapiro and Professor Liqun Qi.

The first China-Australia Workshop on Optimization: Theory, Methods and Applications was successfully held in Shanghai, China, from May 21-23, 2004. The workshop was jointly organized by Shanghai University, Ballarat University and Curtin University of Technology.

Both the first and the second workshop were very successful. We hope that this series of workshops will be extended and the 3rd China-Australia workshop on Optimization: Theory, Methods and Applications will be held in China in 2005.
