Law and Design: The 10 commandments of copyright
On Tuesday 13 May Design Victoria together with Commerce Ballarat and the Australian Graphic Design Association will present the third seminar in the acclaimed law and design series with intellectual property lawyer Trevor Choy.
Copyright is an important area for designers today. Clients are increasingly asking to own copyright, and this can affect designers in different ways – from your right to full fees if clients use your work in ways beyond what was originally agreed, to your ability to collect debts.
For this interactive seminar, intellectual property lawyer Trevor Choy has distilled the legal complexities down to 10 basic concepts, aimed at issues directly facing designers. Other intellectual property laws will also be briefly explained and there will be plenty of time left for your questions to be answered.
This free Business Ready seminar is a must for designers from all disciplines who want to ensure that their designs can be protected.
The seminar will be held 9.30am – 12.30pm, Alexandria on Lydiard, 30 Lydiard Street North, Ballarat, and followed by refreshments and networking opportunities.
Bookings are essential. Please RSVP via email info@commerceballarat.com.au by Friday 9 May.

International Graduations - A Success!
Five very successful international graduation celebrations have been held in recent months including:
Hong Kong on Saturday 13 October - click here for photos from the event
Shenzhen on Sunday 14 October
Beijing on Tuesday 16 October
New Zealand on 8 November
Malaysia on Wednesday 5 December
Each of the ceremonies was officiated by University of Ballarat dignitaries and marked a significant achievement in the lives of the most recent members to join UB's ever growing international alumni family.
In Hong Kong, more than 70 graduates from a range of business qualifications, including the very first graduating class from the Certificate IV in Business (Marketing), joined together with family and friends to celebrate the occasion.
At the China celebrations, in excess of 130 MBA graduates and their guests in Shenzhen enjoyed an occasional address delivered by the Australian Consul General Mr Sean Kelly, while in Beijing, close to 65 Bachelor of Business graduates were each applauded for their achievements. There are now more than 1,300 UB graduates in China, providing a very strong base for the possible formation of ub)alumni Chapters in the region. If you are a graduate in China and would like to be involved in this, please email alumni@ballarat.edu.au.

Abstracts
Amanda McGraw: Recently, I went to America and visited Harvard Graduate
School of Education and also New York State University in Albany. This
presentation is a story in words and images that focuses on the need for
connectedness and presence in professional learning. I will attempt to
capture my own thinking and learning and how that develops through
diverse, rich experiences with others.
Rob Davis will discuss findings and stories from his visit to
educational institutions in Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei & Hong Kong. In each of these countries, teacher training institutes and primary schools
were part of an exploration of what teaching and learning mean in the SE
Asian context. Issues such as systemic pressures and imperatives in
education, as well as future possible directions will be discussed.
Possible opportunities and challenges within these education
jurisdictions will also form part of the presentation.

The NT: a land of opportunity for teachers
Qualified teachers, including graduates and experienced professionals, are invited to turn their knowledge into the experience of a lifetime.
The Northern Territory is seeking teachers to fill a range positions in schools. There is particular demand in remote parts of the Territory, which often have schools with only one or two teachers. Positions such as these are a great opportunity for teachers to step up to the role of principal and gain experience that will help to fast track their careers.
Positions are available right now in a number of remote schools in Central Australia. Many of the communities have only a couple of hundred people living a very traditional lifestyle, with a single teacher in charge of a dozen or so kids – most of whom speak English as a second (or third, or even fourth) language.

Australian Alumni Night, Shenzhen
The Australian Consulate-General Guangzhou Mr Sean Kelly, together with Australian Education International (AEI) hosted an ‘Australian Alumni Night’ on Wednesday 16 May 2007 at the Sheraton Shenzhen Futian Hotel.
The purpose of the evening was to acknowledge and thank Australian University graduates residing in Shenzhen for the many and varied contributions they make towards Australian – China relations.
The night was a follow-up activity of the ‘My Favourite Memory as a Student in Australia’ photo competition in which graduates were invited to submit photos that captured student life in Australia.
Attendees enjoyed a night of fun and entertainment, including a special buffet of Australian-style cuisine and fine Australian wines, accompanied by performances from the Australian Jazz trio Blues Solution and Aboriginal dancing from Western Creation.
With thanks to the tremendous efforts of our colleagues at the Shenzhen Office, two thirds of the participants were University of Ballarat MBA students and alumni, representing intakes 1 through to 15. The University’s Shenzhen Office was even lucky enough to receive a prize for one of its entries into the photo competition!
The Consul-General was most grateful to the University of Ballarat and particularly to the University’s Shenzhen Office for our combined support for this event.
