1. What is REEP?

The University of Ballarat is dedicated to helping regional and rural students gain a place in a degree program at university.

REEP enables secondary students to apply for guaranteed entry into one of UB's higher education undergraduate degree programs. When students apply through REEP they are assessed on their demonstrated motivation to succeed and contributions to their school and community, not just their ATAR.

2. How is my place guaranteed?

If your application is successful, by the end of November we will make you a provisional offer. This means that if you achieve the minimum required ATAR and satisfy all the prerequisites and extra requirements for your degree program you are guaranteed an official offer of a place through VTAC at Round 1 in January.

3. How do I apply?

  • The application is made through VTAC www.vtac.edu.au
  • Once VTAC opens in August, you can begin to choose your VTAC preferences; remember you can choose up to 12 courses to apply for
  • Next, you decide on which University of Ballarat program you want to apply for REEP guaranteed entry into and make sure it is one of your preferences
  • Finally, you must make a REEP application for that program through Category 6 of the VTAC Special Entry Access Scheme (SEAS)

Please note:

  • If you do not make a REEP application though SEAS we will not be able to make you a provisional offer.
  • The requirements for the application are very straightforward and all the SEAS application information is on the VTAC website at www.vtac.com.au
  • REEP applications open with VTAC and SEAS applications on Monday 6 August 2012; the closing date is 5pm Tuesday 9 October 2012

4. Is this different from last year?

Yes, we have listened to feedback from our students and from teachers at schools and colleges around Victoria and have tried to make the process much more straightforward and less time consuming for everybody.

5. Who can apply?

You can apply if you are a current Year 12 student from a nominated school in the following regions: Central Highlands, Wimmera, Loddon, Mallee, Barwon, Western District, Hume & Gippsland. REEP is also open to regional students from nominated schools in the Melbourne metropolitan area and NSW. Visit the following link to find the full list of eligible schools and colleges: REEP eligible schools 2012-2013

6. Which degree programs can I apply for?

You can apply for any higher education undergraduate degree programs which do not have a range of special admission criteria such as portfolio and audition. These degree programs are listed as 'eligible for REEP' in the 2013 VTAC Guide; a full list of these eligible degree programs is also listed here: REEP eligible degree programs.

7. What is the difference between a degree program and a course?

At UB we refer to 'degree programs' rather than 'degree courses'. A degree program is what you would be studying for the next 3 or 4 years (i.e. your degree). When you look up UB degree programs in the VTAC Guide they will be called courses in line with all other Victorian universities

8. Will there be quotas for the number of students offered REEP places?

The University reserves the right to place quotas on all degree programs. Some degree programs are highly competitive and are likely to impose a quota on the number of REEP provisional offers made. However, if you believe that you can demonstrate the qualities of motivation and determination required to succeed and a school or community involvement that reflects the degree program you want to study, then you should apply.

9. Will I be selected on the basis of my ATAR?

To receive an official VTAC offer in January, you have to achieve the minimum required ATAR listed for your program at www.ballarat.edu.au/reep. To receive an early provisional offer in November, you will be assessed on your motivation to succeed and contribution to your school and community.

10. What are the other requirements?

If you receive a provisional offer, you will need to satisfy any prerequisites and extra requirements for it to become an official offer. Check in the 2013 VTAC guide for the prerequisites & extra requirements for your degree program. You are responsible for making arrangements to satisfy those requirements.

Interstate students are advised to check that they will satisfy all prerequisites before applying.

VTAC will forward your highest preference offer so if you want to be sure of receiving your official offer for your REEP program, you will also need to place your REEP degree program as first preference with VTAC.

11. How many degree programs can I apply for through REEP?

You can apply for one degree program through REEP but we welcome your application for other degree programs at UB; you apply for these as part of your 12 preferences through VTAC in the normal way or make a direct application where this applies.

12. What happens to my REEP application once I have submitted it through SEAS Category 6?

During October and November, UB Selection Officers make their decision based upon the information you submit to VTAC and the selection criteria for the program. The selection criteria can be viewed here: REEP Selection and Administration Guidelines 2012-2013

We will write to you in late November 2012 to tell you whether you have been successful and are receiving a provisional offer.

13. What is a provisional offer?

If your application is successful you will receive a provisional offer, which means that if you achieve the minimum required ATAR and satify all the prerequisites and extra requirements for your degree program you are guaranteed an official offer of a place.

14. Does my REEP degree program have to be placed first on my list on the VTAC preference list?

You may receive offers for a number of courses on your VTAC preference list; however, VTAC will automatically forward only one offer, the highest preference. In order to guarantee an official offer* in January 2013, at Round 1, your REEP course preference should be at the top of your preference list.

(*Your offer is guaranteed if you have been made a provisional offer; achieved the minimum required ATAR and satisfied all the pre-requisites and extra requirements).

15. What happens if I don't receive a provisional offer?

We receive many applications through REEP and selection can be competitive. If you do not reveive a provisional offer you become a regular VTAC applicant; if you are still interested in the degree program we recommend that you leave it as one of your VTAC preferences as you could still receive an offer during VTAC rounds. You should always discuss your preferences and decisions with your careers advisor.

16. I have a provisional offer through REEP but don't satisfy the prerequisites or extra requirements; will I still receive an official offer through VTAC?

No; you will not receive an official VTAC offer for you REEP degree program in January.

Please note that it is essential to meet the prerequisites and extra requirements to be eligible for your degree program.

You will need to follow the advice of your careers advisor or call the UB course information line on 1800 811 711.

17. I have a provisional offer through REEP but have not achieved the minimum required ATAR; will I still recieve an official offer through VTAC?

No, you will not be eligible for an official 'REEP offer', however you may still be eligible for a regular offer if the 'clearly-in' falls below the REEP minimum ATAR. There are many UB programs for which you may be eligible. Contact the UB Course Information Line on 1800 811 711. 18. Can I defer?

If you receive an official offer through VTAC for your REEP degree program (mid-January) you may apply for a deferment from your degree program. Deferment is not automatically granted, and must be applied for. You will receive information about deferment in your enrolment pack along with your official offer.

19. Will other SEAS information be taken into account?

Not for your REEP official offer but in all other respects, yes.

20. I am an inter-state applicant, how will this affect my selection?

The same selection criteria will apply to you as Victorian applicants; the same REEP timelines will also apply i.e. you will receive information at the same time. However your state timeline may differ slightly from that of Victoria.

Please note, you will also need to pay particular attention to the prerequisites for the degree program you are interested in applying for.
