Australia has a democratic system of government and it was in Ballarat where it all started. It was in this city in 1854, where the working class people made their stance against the authorities in a civil and bloody standoff. From this protest the democratic movement was born in Australia.
Today, Ballarat is a modern, growing regional city of over 90,000 people. Situated just over an hours drive northwest of Melbourne, the capital of Victoria; Ballarat is the ideal location for the international student. To the west are the magnificent coastal ranges and rainforests, to the south Melbourne city and the bay area; to the east rolling plains and to the north, the majestic Grampians National Parks.
