Institute for Regional and Rural Research (IRRR)
UB’s Institute for Regional and Rural Research (IRRR) is a friendly, commercially focused body that is seriously involved in making regional and rural areas grow and prosper. IRRR encourages regional enterprises to embrace inventiveness and new approaches to deliver economic, social, cultural and environmental benefits, and seeks to address important questions of national and international significance.
IRRR seeks out new opportunities and provides leadership and direction to UB’s four designated Research Centres: CEM, CIAO, CHRP and CRIC. Its researchers speak your language, value equally history, knowledge, and inventiveness, and are working to make UB links with partner organisations function more strategically within the national and international context.

Centre for Environmental Management (CEM)
CEM has been active in research and consultancy for both government and private organisations for nearly 20 years. It has built a strong reputation for its research and consultancy work in environmental management, land use management planning, flora and fauna survey and assessment, and experimental design.
CEM’s multidisciplinary research teams are highly regarded for their ability to produce quality output within client timelines. Individual staff members are nationally recognised, particularly for their original work on the ecology of arid zones and the application of computer technology to natural resource management.

Centre for Health Research and Practice (CHRP)
CHRP focuses on quality research, postgraduate education and community development in health and wellbeing, particularly as they impact on people outside the major urban centres of Australia.
Drawing upon staff from a broad range of disciplines including psychology, sociology, social work and social welfare, education, nursing, and human movement, CHRP seeks to advance and apply knowledge to improve the health of people in rural and regional communities. Using this multidisciplinary approach, the Centre is able to offer knowledge and expertise in a variety of health fields, and has developed strong research partnerships with local communities and organisations.

Centre for Informatics and Applied Optimization (CIAO)
CIAO provides state of the art research knowledge for application to a range of industrial, organisational and commercial areas. This expertise can improve the efficiency and international competitiveness of Australian industry, whether resource, manufacturing, commercial or government.
CIAO has become a nationally recognised research centre and is unique, in that it brings together key fields of research in mathematics and information technology. CIAO’s fields of expertise include applied optimization, mathematical and statistical analysis, data mining and decision support, health informatics, distributed simulation, and graph techniques. Further expertise is available within emerging communication technologies, intelligent finance, data security, and interactive entertainment technology.

Centre for Regional Innovation and Competitiveness (CRIC)
CRIC explores the development of enterprise, business and community in a regional context and works with public and private interests to influence measures that promote the growth and sustainability of regional Australia.
CRIC expertise extends across a range of disciplines and sectors including electronic commerce, tourism, agribusiness and third sector enterprise and small to medium enterprise development, leadership and innovation as well as technology and social change, and community development. CRIC is breaking new ground in many research areas and provides a diverse range of consultancy services offering expertise in clustering, economic development, impact assessment, survey design, and evaluation methodologies.

VIOSH Australia
VIOSH Australia is a cross-disciplinary centre located in the School of Science and Engineering at the UB. VIOSH is recognised as one of Australia’s leading centres in occupational health and safety delivering both formal educational programs and short courses in OHS. Many courses can be tailored to meet the specific needs of clients.
Together with a network of consultants, VIOSH Australia provides training, professional consultancy and contract research to corporate and industry association clients aimed at increasing health and safety literacy in Australian workplaces. VIOSH Australia undertakes research and development to reduce occupational risk and can provide OHS solution-focussed advice to assist client organisations increase productivity through programs targeting workplace health and safety.

National Centre for Sustainability (NCS)
UB’s SMB Campus is home to the National Centre for Sustainability. The NCS provides educational leadership and works in partnership with industry, government and community to undertake program delivery, resource development, project work and applied research to support the development of sustainable practices.
The University of Ballarat is one of four member institutes of the NCS which advises domestic, commercial, government and non-profit organisations on a range of sustainability-related issues. Using internally developed methodologies and internationally adopted frameworks, the NCS develops Triple-Bottom-Line reports and assists organisations with the implementation of the reviewed strategies.

Specialist Centre for Building, Construction & Design
The Specialist Centre works in conjunction with the University of Ballarat's Department of Building & Construction, and, with a focus on sustainability issues also works hand in hand with the National Centre for Sustainability.
The Specialist Centre programs include producing specialised training
activities with a sustainability focus and relating to the building construction
& design industries; seminars and short courses advising on sustainable
practices in the whole of the built environment including plazas, terraces and
gardens which may surround buildings; information sessions on heritage issues in
regard to sustainable practices in restoration and renovation and; advice to
consumers on sustainable practices in the built environment through a series of
short seminars aimed at the general public or interest groups. Besides the short
courses the Specialist Centre provides consulting services.

Centre for Electronic Commerce and Communications (CECC)
CECC promotes the advancement of eCommerce through education, training research and consultancies, particularly in its practical application in regional and rural Australia.
The Centre has extensive experience in developing web-based applications, community portals and online services as well as delivering eCommerce training and mentoring programs which assist clients in the development, implementation and management of eCommerce initiatives. CECC’s approach is characterised by partnerships with geographical communities, regional groups, businesses and with local, state and federal governments.

University of Ballarat Technology Park
The UB Technology Park is responsible for implementing a strategic initiative for the region to promote and develop regional technology companiesa and serves as an incubator to start-up enterprises while housing a range of organisations including multinational companies.
Several purpose-designed buildings are situated within the Park. The Greenhill Enterprise Centre is a progressive, technology incubator that aims to provide an environment within which to nurture world-class technology start-up businesses. Tenants of the Centre have had strong success and become part of a community committed to making successful technology business a way of life in regional Victoria.
The multi-million dollar Global Innovation Centre further fosters this business incubation program by providing high tech facilities for companies which have already successfully grown in the region and are ready to commercialise their businesses.
The terrific location of Ballarat Technology Park allows businesses to network with companies in similar fields and access business support services. It offers the opportunity for successful businesses to perform in a multi-national arena without having to leave the Park. Close ties to UB provide intellectual resources and technical facilities while further promoting cooperation between education and industry.
