Data mining and decision support

Organisations collect vast amounts of data on a daily basis. Basing critical decisions on this “wealth” of data is often frustrated by difficulties in extracting crucial information from data storages. Researchers within the Centre for Informatics and Applied Optimization (CIAO) are using advanced data mining and informatics techniques to extract and analyse data, to discover important relationships and global patterns. This knowledge can then be used to develop intelligent decision support systems.

Data security

People are concerned with their personal information being stored on vast computer systems. Governments have enacted privacy legislation to safeguard this personal information but intelligent systems are needed to safeguard privacy. These systems need to contain sophisticated security mechanisms to ensure an individual’s privacy. CIAO researchers are involved in encryption/decryption, key management and statistical inference algorithms.

Distributed simulation

Distributed simulation is an advanced simulation method which provides a unique environment in which distinct simulation elements work together across a network to produce a larger simulation. Distributed simulation, utilising High Level Architecture (HLA), enables these different elements to interact in real time allowing for the optimization of the larger system. These simulations significantly reduce costs, improve safety and performance, and compress critical test time frames.

Electronic business

The School of Business offers two postgraduate courses in Electronic Business.
The Master of Electronic Business is designed to provide graduates with the necessary skills, knowledge and leadership to become key players in the new 'Information Age' markets. These graduates will be the entrepreneurs and strategists in this exciting new era. Electronic business examines emerging technologies, the new business processes and the new markets they create in areas such as the internet, mobile communications, the embodiment of information technology in new products, globalisation, the increasing concentration and interdependence of industries.

The Graduate Certificate of Electronic Business will provide students with theoretical and practical concepts of electronic business. The general orientation of the Graduate Certicate of Electronic Business prepares students for roles in general management where electronic business is emerging. The emphasis is to develop a sound working knowledge of core electronic business concepts and issues.

Graph techniques

The application of graph theory covers almost all aspects of life, from representing the delicate ecosystem of a rainforest to scheduling juggernauts in nationwide routes, from a physical function like microchip processor design to something entirely abstract such as social relationships and interactions. Graphs enable the simple visualisation and analysis of complex systems.

Health informatics

Data mining techniques also play a major role in decision support systems within health. An example is the adverse drug reaction project, which aids identification of associations between drugs and adverse drug reactions. Electronic messaging is increasingly being used to transfer health information between the medical profession, hospitals networks and other health care facilities. A key requirement is that messages conform to standards designed to enable interoperability between different databases and information systems. The Collaborative Centre for eHealth (CCeH), within the Centre for Informatics and Applied Optimization (CIAO), assists the health industry to implement HL7 compliant electronic messaging.

Informatics and applied optimization

Industry and government can potentially make significant improvements in productivity and competitiveness by applying new knowledge in optimization. Researchers in the Centre for Informatics and Applied Optimization (CIAO) are world leaders in the development of optimization methods, which can be applied to large complex systems, and which avoid assumptions of smoothness and convexity. Significantly more powerful than traditional approaches, these methods are capable of addressing problems with thousands of variables to achieve significant productivity benefits.

The application of this knowledge can deliver significant benefits to: production and supply of strategic resources (oil, gas, water, power), telecommunications infrastructure planning and efficient utilisation, pharmaceutical design, mining, risk management, transportation infrastructure and planning, and manufacturing/process engineering.

Knowledge modeling

Expert systems have not become as prevalent as anticipated because capturing knowledge using rules is cumbersome and maintaining the knowledge, particularly if the expert system was installed on many independent computers, is extremely difficult. CIAO now offers a solution to this problem.

Methods for representing knowledge more effectively than rules have been developed, and the use of the world wide web has become commonplace. Web based decision support systems enable global access to systems, though knowledge is stored in just one place. The knowledge base is maintained by updating just one location. Furthermore, powerful methods for representing knowledge such as argument trees can capture all kinds of knowledge far more effectively than rules. CIAO researchers utilise state of the art data mining methods to derive knowledge from large databases to build the rules underlying expert decision support systems.
