Outline
The Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting) is designed as a flexible program. It will give you the skills you need to be a leader in Commerce and Business. It focuses on the hard-edged courses needed for professional accrediation with the major professional bodies as well as providing a well-defined career path for professionals in the world of commerce.
The study of accounting appeals to aspiring professionals in a broad range of fields because of its importance in promoting effective organisational management and accountability. |
Career Opportunities
Graduates with an accounting specialisation are employed in a wide variety of commercial, government and professional settings. These include public accounting, banking, teaching, goverment organisations, stockbroking, business consulting, and the retailing, manufacturing and mining industries. Functional responsibilities include accounting, information systems analysis and design, financial reporting, cost accounting, finance, taxation, audit, financial planning and general management responsibilities. |

Requirements
Student workload in the program will normally be evenly spread across all semesters. Ordinarily, this will involve four programs of 15 credit points per semester for full-time students. Contact hours for full-time students will normally be a maximum of 12 hours per week.
The program is made up of a total of 24 programs which includes foundation programs (8), core programs (8) and electives programs (8).
Foundation programs should be completed early in the program of study (i.e. by the end of the third semester). Core and elective programs can be undertaken throughout the program.
To fulfil the academic requirements for the Bachelor of Commerce a student will complete an approved program of study comprising the following:
Gain a minimum of 360 progress courses of which at least 16 programs must be Foundation and Specialisation programs. The Accounting specialisation where 12 introductory programs are permitted.

Entry Requirements
Successful completion of the VCE including prerequisites Units 1 and 2 - two units of Mathematics (any); interstate or overseas equivalent; Mature Age entry. |
Extra Requirements
Non-Year 12 applicants who apply via VTAC must complete and submit the VTAC Pi form to VTAC with their application. Non-Year 12 appliants who are required to attend an interview will be notified by telephone or mail. |
Professional Recognition
The Bachelor of Commerce at Mt Helen campus is accredited by Australia's two leading professional accounting associations: CPA Australia and The Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia. Completion of an accredited degree is the first step towards qualifying as a member of these associations and becoming a CPA or Chartered Accountant. Bachelor of Commerce students may also be eligible to apply for membership of the Australian Computing Society and the Financial Services Institute of Australasia, upon completion of nominated courses in the Bachelor of Commerce. |
