The Short Course in Building Thermal Performance Assessment
(Residential), (FirstRate5) was developed by the Nationwide House
Energy Rating Scheme (NatHERS) National Administrator to address the
skills and knowledge required by HERS assessors using second
generation assessment software within different climates and
regulatory frameworks throughout Australia. This training is
intended to meet the needs of regulators, HER assessors and the
design and construction industry in Victoria. It represents a
significant increase in the level of skill and knowledge required by
HER assessors and is intended to enable improved ability to achieve
homes with five-star, or better, performance in a practical,
cost-effective way. FirstRate5 Software includes the AccuRate
calculation engine plus a host of new features.

Pre-requisites:
- Participants should have the ability to read and interpret
plans and specifications
- Use basic computer technology
- Have knowledge relating to basic principles of how buildings
are constructed
- Current qualifications relating to the construction, design or
certification of residential buildings OR demonstrated
experience in working with builders.
The course is 4 days duration and will be offered in various
formats in 2009 such as 4 consecutive days, 2 x 2 days or 1
day/week over 4 weeks.

Description:
This new Course has been developed by
Sustainability Victoria and provides participants with the training
and skills to conduct sustainability assessments in residential
properties. It covers the actions required to reduce water usage,
energy consumption and advises on waste recycling, garden and
environs and related sustainability measures. The course covers
customer service, OH&S and auditing methods.
Home Sustainability Assessors will be required in the future to
conduct assessments for and on behalf of energy retailers, water
authorities, municipal councils and other bodies involved in
improving sustainability and reducing greenhouse gases. |
Course participants will be trained to:
- Identify customer needs
- Prepare for an assessment
- Develop an assessment plan
- Evaluate energy & water consumption
- Evaluate options for waste management
- Evaluate gardens & environs
- Provide advice on sustainability issues
- Deliver a valuable service to customers
- Identify occupational health & safety risks.
- Advise on occupational health & safety improvements.

The course offers rich employment opportunities for the future and
is well suited to tradespeople wishing to update their skills or
extend their services, builders, architects, landscapers, or anyone
who is passionate about sustainability in the residential setting.
This Course has national accreditation Code - 21854VIC Home
Sustainability Assessor's Course and is an approved pre-requisite
for the Green Loans Assessors Course. The University of Ballarat
will soon be offering the Green Loans Assessment training as a 2 day
top-up program after completion of the 21854VIC course.. Further
details will be available late 2009.
The Course is an 80 hour program and is delivered on campus at
SMB. Classes are held two days/week over 4 weeks.
