The Institute for Regional and Rural Research and Innovation (IRRRI) provides strategic leadership to advance the University's research activities through its four designated research centres, the Centre for Environmental Management, the Centre for Health Research and Practice, the Centre for Informatics and Applied Optimization and the Centre for Regional Innovation and Competitiveness.

IRRRI fosters the development of collaborative research programs of national and international significance that contribute to the social, economic, environmental and cultural well-being of communities and regions served by the University.

Centre for Environmental Management (CEM)
CEM is based within the School of Science and Engineering. It undertakes research and consultancies with a focus on natural resource management, in particular the management of natural and human disturbance to the environment.

Centre for Health Research and Practice (CHRP)
CHRP has a strong commitment to working with local communities and health and welfare agencies to enhance the wellbeing of people in the region. Areas of research focus include resilience, rural health and well-being and preparing health professionals for practice.

Centre for Regional Innovation and Competitiveness (CRIC)
Based in the School of Business, CRIC's research focus is on the nature of regional enterprises, and regional growth models. Additional research interests include the valuation of resources and non-market goods, and the role of ICT in regional development.

Centre for Informatics and Applied Optimization (CIAO)
Located in the School of ITMS, CIAO researchers are leaders in mathematical modelling and the application of global optimization methods to industry problems. Other research strengths include data mining and informatics applied to information security and health, and graph theory approaches to complex systems.
