Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is offered by all schools of the University of Ballarat

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) clause in Regulation 5.1 states it shall be awarded without classification on the basis of the candidate having made a substantial contribution to knowledge and having demonstrated an understanding of the relationship of the investigations undertaken to a wider field of knowledge.
The following types of programs may be approved by the Board as appropriate for a candidate to undertake in order to qualify for the award of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy:

  1. original scholarship and research carried out by the candidate under supervision.
  2. preparation and presentation of a major work or collection of works, including but not restricted to visual presentation , literary production or computer software development, carried out by the candidate under supervision and accompanied by a written exegesis. The practical works must demonstrate a systematic line of enquiry and investigation, and there must be a demonstrable and essential link between the practical works and the exegesis. The exegesis should reveal and elaborate the line of enquiry and investigation pursued in preparation of the practical works and provide commentary on individual practical works and overall.
