Register of Supervisors

All academics who wish to supervise University of Ballarat students must make an application to be included on the official Register of Supervisors of the University of Ballarat. If not included on the Register, a person is ineligible to supervise University of Ballarat students.

This form must be completed and approved prior to commencing supervision of Higher Degree by Research students.

Provisional Principal Supervisor

Supervisors that have been approved on the register at 'Associate Supervisor' level may apply for registration as a Provisional Principal Supervisor OR apply for this Registration level for the first time.

Applications for admission to the Register of Research Higher Degree Supervisors as a Provisional Principal Supervisor for doctoral candidates will be made on the prescribed form.
The following conditions must be met:

  • The applicant must hold at least a 0.5 time fraction academic position within the University. This requirement may be waived in specific cases by the Dean of Graduate Studies.
  • The applicant will hold a doctoral qualification and have a record of research achievement, but may not have supervised a doctoral student to completion.

Staff may also be registered as Provisional Principal Supervisors as a result of the review process outlined in section 4.6. (in the Procedure, Register of Research Higher Degree Supervisors)

Provisional Principal Supervisors will be assigned to an approved Director of Supervisors and will receive mentoring and guidance for a specified time.

A 'Director of Provisional Principal Supervisors' will be assigned to a School to mentor and guide Provisional Principal Supervisors for a prescribed time. The Director will have a record in research, research publications and supervision of doctoral students to completion. The person will not necessarily be a current member of academic staff of the School in question.

Student - Principal Supervisor Agreement on Candidature Arrangements

It is expected that the Principal Supervisor and student will complete this document and append a copy to the student’s first Progress Report. Some parts of the Agreement may change over the course of candidature. Any changes will be agreed to by the student and the Principal Supervisor.

Minimum Resources and other Support for Research Higher Degree Students

It is expected that Supervisors will be aware of the rights and needs of students for resources and support as outlined in this document

Miscellaneous Request Form

Higher Degree by Research Students are advised that the "Miscellaneous Request Form" is available to report any issues or concerns at any time. However, students are advised that the form should only be used if other avenues to address the issue or concern, i.e. discuss with supervisors, discuss with RHDE Coordinator, discuss with Head of School, have not been successful.The request form is to be forwarded to the RAGSO who will liaise with the Dean of Graduate Studies who will determine appropriate action.
