SET and SEU

UB is committed to creating excellent learning opportunities for its students, members of the community, and other learners through the provision of effective teaching.

SET and SEU are evaluation instruments designed for teaching staff to obtain feedback from students. SET (Student Evaluation of Teaching) is used by the teacher to gather information about their teaching style and performance as reflected in the responses of their students. SEU (Student Evaluation of Units) is used to gather information about the students' opinion of the unit content and structure. All teachers should request a SET, but only the unit coordinator (or one member of a unit design team) should request a SEU.

SET and SEU Evaluation Request Form

To initiate a SET and SEU Evaluation, you will need to complete a request form. The form can be downloaded by clicking the following link: SET and SEU Evaluation Request Form

To complete the form, fill in the following fields:

  • From: Fill in your contact details, sign and date the form. You can only complete a request form for yourself. You cannot request a SET and SEU for someone else.
  • SET or SEU: Write SET for an evaluation of your teaching or SEU for an evaluation of the unit. One choice only per cell. There is provision on the form to make four separate requests.
  • Unit Code: Write the unit code for example BE 508.
  • Unit title: Write the unit title for example Business Macroeconomics.
  • Number of students: Write the total number of students in that unit that you expect will actually take part in the evaluation.
  • Evaluation Date DD/MM/YY: Write the expected date of the evaluation. Don't worry if you can't perform the evaluation on that exact date. Also please allow at least 5 business days from the receipt of your form for it to be processed.
  • Optional group code: If you want the standard 10 questions that everyone receives, leave this blank. If you want to add 10 additional questions that have been grouped accroding to particular themes, write in the appropriate group code. An example for a SET evaluation would be "T" which is for Small Group Lecturing. The full list of optional group codes is available by clicking the link further down this page.
  • Optional items (Questions 11 to 20): If you want more than the standard 10 questions, but you do not want to use an optional group code, you can select 10 individual questions from the list available from this website. The important point to note is that if you request a SET, you must only choose individual questions from the SET list, not the SEU list; and vice versa.
  • Open ended question: Here you can write a question of 15 words or less, asking for student comment. Be careful that your question is appropriate for the nature of the evaluation. For example a question on a SEU evaluation might be "Was the current textbook helpful or not?". This would not be appropriate on a SET evaluation because the question relates to the unit content not the performance of the teacher.

Once the form is complete, post it in the internal mail or fax it to Angela Gamble, RAGSO, Mt. Helen campus. You will then receive, by internal mail, a complete package of instructions and materials for conducting the evaluation.

Once your evaluation has been returned, it will normally be processed within two weeks, and a report will be produced. You will receive the report in the mail as soon as it has been completed. Once the grades for the current semester have been officially released by the University, you will also receive the actual answer sheets so that you can read the written responses.

If you have any questions about conducting a SET and SEU evaluation, please contact Angela Gamble on (03) 5327 9192 or by email a.gamble@ballarat.edu.au.
