Biography
Derek is a consulting risk engineer and management consultant in risk control with twenty five years of experience covering most industries in both the practical and academic development of risk-based methods applicable to all fields of pure risk, including occupational health and safety. He is also Adjunct Professor of Risk Management at the Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne, Australia and author of three books, a number of handbooks and over 30 papers.
His academic teaching is in the area of the risk philosophy and the understanding of accidents. His industrial experience covers numerous industries as diverse as steel, electricity, mining, food, service and hospitality in Australia, South Africa, India and Thailand. He has lead many industry-based projects and reviews and has conducted numerous audits of occupational health and safety management systems, as well as designing two OHS management system definition and audit tools.
He has been active in the Safety Institute of Australia and the Risk Engineering activities of the Institution of Engineers, Australia.
