The AusIMM EEF Scholarships
Applications for the 2009 AusIMM EEF Scholarships are now open. Please find operating rules and application form attached to this page.
The AusIMM Education Endowment Fund (EEF) Scholarships were established to support the future leaders of the minerals industry through their higher education studies. The Scholarships are currently valued at $8,000 per year for a standard EEF scholarship, and $14,000 per year for a Sir Frank Espie/Rio Tinto scholarship.
As well as receiving financial support over two years, students receive the invaluable benefits of mentoring and networking opportunities with a major minerals company. That is, companies who have made major donations to the Education Endowment Fund are allocated scholarship holders, and are encouraged to engage the student with the industry through vacation work and other initiatives.
Scholarships are awarded to students based on the following criteria:
- Knowledge of the minerals industry
- Minerals industry work experience (vacation or part-time work)
- Demonstrated commitment to the minerals industry after graduation
- Participation in AusIMM activities (Student Chapters, Branch activities and conferences)
- Participation in other minerals-related societies
- Academic results
- Demonstrated team and leadership skills (via sporting and community activities or other activities)
- Scholarships are currently valued at $8,000 per year over two years and are supported by a variety of leading mining companies. Companies that have made major donations to the Education Endowment Fund (EEF) are allocated a Scholarship Naming Right.

Xstrata Zinc Commencer Scholarships
Up to ten commencer scholarships will be offered in 2010 to applicants who are first year undergraduates studying in the areas of metallurgy or geology. They are valued at $1,000 for 1 year.
The scholarships are offered to the most eligible applicants who have lodged a scholarship application with the School of Science and Engineering. Students starting mid-year are able to apply at the beginning of the following calendar year.

Offers
Offers will be made after Thursday 1 April and presented at the School of Science & Engineering Awards Ceremony to be held 4 May 2010.
Deferability
Scholarships cannot be deferred.

Xstrata Zinc Senior Scholarships
Up to five scholarships will be offered in 2010 to applicants who are second year undergraduates studying in the areas of metallurgy, geology, mining engineering, civil engineering or mechanical engineering.
They are valued at:
- $ 4,000 for the third year of study in geology, metallurgy and mining engineering or,
- $ 2,000 for the third year of study in civil and mechanical engineering.
Successful applicants will also be required to commit to undertake 12 weeks of paid vacation work with Xstrata Zinc ideally between second and third year of the course.
The scholarships are offered to the most eligible applicants who have lodged a scholarship application with the School of Science & Engineering.

Honours Scholarships: Environmental Management and Biology
The Environmental Management area of the School of Science and Engineering, University of Ballarat is seeking expressions of interest from prospective students for funded Honours positions for 2007 in a range of areas relating to environmental management and biology. Available projects include:
- Survivorship and recruitment of the "endangered" Corangamite Water Skink (Cook)
- Impact of pesticide drift on the invertebrate prey of the Striped Legless Lizard (Cook)
- Distribution of the Striped Legless Lizard across an agricultural gradiant (Cook)
- Diversity of arid zone lizards on fragmented dune systems in western NSW (Cook)
- Impacts of elevated bird populations on canopy invertebrates around water points in the arid zone (Cook)
- Environmental implications of the Wimmera-Mallee pipeline project: changes to water availability in a semi-arid landscape (Cook)
- Increased abundance of a specialist gall insect is related to its host plant vigour: oviposition preference or better larval performance? (Florry)
- Biological control of the invasive liane Mcfadyena unguis-cati: developing sampling methodology for bio-evaluation (Florry)
- Effect of temperature on weed seed viability (Florry)
- Responses of the flora and fauna of the Lake Wendouree precinct to prolonged drought and the provision of recycled water (Florry)
- The impact of the South West Integrated Flora & Fauna Team (SWIFFT) on community attitudes (Graz)
Applicants must hold a relevant undergraduate degree. The successful applicants will be located at the Mt Helen Campus in Ballarat. Scholarships of up to $5,000 are available for all projects. Honours can be taken full-time or part-time and can commence early in the year or mid-year.

School of Science and Engineering Financial Aid Scholarships
In 2009 there will be eight financial aid scholarships available to students enrolled in an undergraduate course with the School of Science and Engineering.
6 Education Costs Scholarships: $2,207 each
Two of these scholarships will be set aside as School Based Indigenous Education Cost Scholarship for 2009.
2 Indigenous Education Cost Scholarship: $2,207 each.

UB Financial Aid Scholarships
Developed to assist regional and remote, low socio-economic, drought affected and Indigenous students with the costs associated with further education, the UB Financial Aid Scholarships are merit-based, non-repayable, and awarded for one year of study at UB.
Numerous types are available, with the eligibility criteria based on the Commonwealth Learning Scholarships. To meet the base criteria, you must be:
- Enrolled in your first undergraduate degree, or the Graduate Diploma of Education (Secondary), or a nominated TAFE Arts Academy course; and
- An Australian citizen or holder of a permanent humanitaritan visa; and
- Undertaking a full-time load, or have exceptional circumstances for not studying full-time; and
- Able to demonstrate low socio-economic status.
NB: Students must meet additional criteria for the University of Ballarat's Drought Relief Scholarships, Accommodation Scholarships, Dr Mary Atkinson Scholarship, School-based Financial Aid Scholarships and Free Computer Equity Scheme.

Vice Chancellor's Scholarships & Awards
The Vice-Chancellor awards Scholarships to the value of $1000 to ten Year 12 students within the Central Highlands, Wimmera, Barwon, Loddon, Mallee and Western District regions who enrol in a University of Ballarat course. The Scholarships are awarded on the basis of excellence in their areas of study, contributions to the community and to their school.
Awards to the value of $100 are also available to the Year 10 students who achieve the best results within their school, in each of the secondary schools within the Central Highlands and Wimmera regions. These awards will be presented at Secondary School Speech Nights.

Rural Finance Scholarships
Rural Finance is committed to the on-going education and skills development of young farmers and other young people involved in Victorian agriculture. Each year Rural Finance offers up to six scholarships worth up to $6,000 per annum to Victorian students for the duration of their course.
Who can Apply?
- Students attending a tertiary institution in Victoria
- Student in the first or second year of their first undergraduate degree
- Students under 26 years of age
- Studies may include agriculture, business, food science, forestry, applied science, horticulture, science and veterinary science, among others
- Students must demonstrate a career commitment that will ultimately benefit agriculture
The scholarships are open not only to students who wish to take up farming as a career, but also to those who wish to provide consultancy, research, technical and other services to agriculture.

University of Ballarat Pipe Band Scholarships
The University of Ballarat Pipe Band is a highly successful Victorian Pipe Band with more than 50 members of all ages. Its aim is to promote the Highland Bagpipes and Drums.
Two scholarships are available to the value of $1,000 each (full scholarship), or half scholarships may be awarded to the value of $500. To be eligible for a scholarship, students must be enrolled at the University of Ballarat, and be interested in becoming playing members of the University of Ballarat Pipe Band. Applicants must also have had some tuition in playing Bagpipes or Drums.
