Previous Student Experiences
- Bridget Franc - (Completed Bachelor of Nursing, Ballarat University in 2004 - Graduated in 2005)
Nursing is great, I love it! Our role is so important and we can make such a difference to the lives of so many. There are so many specialty areas, you can do anything! Ballarat University was a great starting point for me. Ballarat University provided me with strong foundations in nursing, fostered my learning and encouraged me to perform to the best of my ability.
I really enjoyed studying at Ballarat University. I was provided with opportunities to focus my studies on areas of nursing that were of particular interest to me. These areas included, rural and adolescent health and indigenous health issues. The course structure at Ballarat Uni, strengthened my interest in Indigenous health issues and fostered my direction in nursing. More specifically studies in rural and community health, as well as social and cultural issues, heightened my awareness of the plight of Indigenous health and provided me with excellent grounding and an understanding of the issues at hand.
Following my studies I accepted a Graduate Nursing position at Royal Darwin Hospital. Nursing in Darwin was great. I was provided with many opportunities to further my professional development. As a graduate nurse, I entered into the speciality area of intensive care. It was both challenging and rewarding! Working at the forefront of Indigenous health, it was an opportunity to consolidate what I had learned throughout my undergraduate studies. I thrived on my experiences in the critical care setting and identified this as an area that I wanted to pursue.
I am currently furthering my studies in critical care nursing at The Alfred. Intensive care is a dynamic challengin environment. I love providing patient and family focused care, working closely with others, being involved in decision making and achieving positve outcomes for those in my care.
- Eliza Berriman - (Completed Bachelor of Nursing, Ballarat University in 2004 - Graduated in 2005)
I really believe it is important as a nursing student to be able to consolidate your theoretical knowledge by receiving a variety of clinical experiences. This is the reason why I chose the University of Ballarat, School of Nursing, as it offers students the opportunity to experience clinical rotations in a variety of regional hospital organisations and specialty areas. The School of Nursing is a relaxing environment with approachable and friendly staff that provide ongoing support "it was never too much trouble to send an email or contact lectures via the telephone". Furthermore, I was acknowledged as a
dedicated student ambassador for the School of Nursing and University of Ballarat while being involved in volunteering for many activities and events. I was also acknowledged for my excellence in academic achievement results. This was demonstrated through receiving a Golden Key International Honours Society Award, as well as receiving letters of commendation from the School of Nursing. In addition, I received the Australian Nursing Federation Undergraduate Nurse Care Award. These opportunities assisted myself in receiving a nursing graduate career at my hospital first preference.
Since completion of the Bachelor of Nursing, I have successfully graduated from the Ballarat Health Services Graduate Nurse Program in 2005. Currently, I am employed at Ballarat Health Services in the Emergency Department while studying the Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing Practice - Emergency Stream. I really enjoy emergency nursing, although it can be challenging, it is an extremely rewarding experience to provide the initial care and treatment for clients and their families within the community.
