How the University uses the SEU data

Each semester the students' opinion of the unit content and structure is reported to the individual Unit co-ordinator through the administration of the Student Evaluation of Units questionnaire (SEU). The evaluation data collected is both quantitative and qualitative and the evaluations of individual units are discussed at the School Courses Committee and published in Course Reports. The Head of School reports SEU results to the Curriculum Committee of Academic Board.

How the staff member uses the SEU data

The data collected is utilised as a basis for a range of decisions such as changes to course structure, course and unit content and assessment, development of other teaching processes, as a focus for individual and group staff development seminars.

There are 8 critical areas explored in the SEU questionnaires

  1. Unit objectives.
  2. Unit content and teaching methods.
  3. Characteristics of the staff who teach the unit which relate to improved learning.
  4. Concern for students and their learning.
  5. The use of formative assessment and feedback in the unit.
  6. Focus on deep learning outcomes.
  7. Curriculum design (including the learning environment, teaching aids and materials).
  8. Commitment to improving the unit.

The ten standard items for recording a ranking in the SEU questionnaire are:
