Biography
Dr Andrew Stranieri was appointed Deputy Director of CIAO in December 2007.
Dr Stranieri holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Melbourne, Graduate and Advanced Diplomas in Computer Science from LaTrobe University, and was also awarded his Doctorate of Philosophy from LaTrobe University.
Awarded an Australian Research Council post doctoral award in 1999, his research was instrumental in establishing an innovative approach for the rapid development of decision support systems in fields including: refugee law (Embrace), copyright law (RightCopy), eligibility for legal aid (GetAid), sentencing and research ethics (justEthics).
Dr Stranieri's research in combining argumentation theory with machine learning to predict Family Court outcomes following divorce (Split Up) demonstrated that decision support systems (DSS) could adequately model discretionary reasoning.
His Springer text "Knowledge Discovery from Legal Databases" further contributed to an acceptance that intelligent systems can have an impact to support decision making under discretion.
Dr Stranieri has published more than 80 peer reviewed books, book chapters, journal and conference articles since 1992.
