Mathematical Analysis and Optimization Research Group (MAORG)
Group Leader: Dr Adil Bagirov
Focus
The main areas of research in MAORG are nonlinear analysis and in particular topology, statistics, numerical methods of nonsmooth and global optimization and their applications, development of optimization based data mining techniques, optimization based algorithms for solving various problems in bioinformatics.
Researchers from MAORG currently hold four ARC Discovery Grants and one ARC Linkage Grant, in the areas of nonsmooth and global optimization and their applications.
In optimization, the focus is on the development of new derivative free algorithms for nonsmooth and global optimization. These algorithms are used to develop new algorithms to solve various problems from data mining and bioinformatics.
Capability
MAORG can provide expertise to industry and government by:
- Developing new algorithms in global and non-smooth optimization
- Modeling real world problems
- Identifying optimal resource allocation
- Generating algebraic group structures
- Identifying optimal use of office space
- Creating models for water efficiency
Engagement
MAORG seeks to form collaborative partnerships within industry, government bodies and other community organizations. Examples of past and current relationships include:
- Woodside Energy
- Shell International
- Kann Finch Pty Ltd
- Transfield Services / Bluescope Steel
