Data Mining and Informatics Research Group (DMIRG)
Group Leader: Dr Peter Vamplew
Focus
This research group focuses on three main areas of research: data mining, decision sciences, and computational intelligence and machine learning.
Data mining research focuses on the development of new algorithms, many of which are based on optimization approaches, but also on the development of new tools and applications. The research includes work on semi-structured data and text, as well as stream data.
Research in the decision sciences includes the solution of decision problems through data mining, but also looks more broadly at modeling knowledge and reasoning to support decision making. It includes multi-objective decision making and optimization.
Computational intelligence and machine learning research is focused on the discovery and development of new learning algorithms, including hybrid learning algorithms, as well as new evolutionary algorithms. An important aspect of the group has been to focus on problems that derive from real rather than artificial data sets.
Capability
DMIRG can provide expertise in the development and application of intelligent decision-making and decision support systems in many areas, including:
- Mining of knowledge from large data sources, including text documents and data streams
- Retrieval of relevant documents and images from large collections
- Clustering and unsupervised learning
- Decision support technologies for reasoning communities
- Artificial neural networks
- Ripple-down rules
- Reinforcement learning
- Evolutionary algorithms
- Intelligent agents
Engagement
DMIRG seeks to form collaborative partnerships within industry, government bodies and other community organizations. Examples of past and current relationships include:
