Vision

To be recognised nationally, internationally and locally as a leading research centre in Informatics and Applied Optimization delivering basic research, applied research and the technologies that underpin applications of these areas.

This vision fits within the broader vision of the University of Ballarat, in which UB aims to be the leading regional, multi-sector University in Australia, acknowledged for its excellence in education, training, research and partnership outcomes and recognised for the benefits it brings to the individuals, organisations and communities it serves.

Mission

To provide state-of-the-art informatics and optimization expertise for improving the efficiency and international competitiveness of commerce, industry and government in the areas of information technology, telecommunications, e-commerce, security, defence, public utilities, and the health, legal and financial sectors.

This mission fits within the broader mission of the University of Ballarat, in which UB aims to be the leading regional university in Victoria and renowned nationally for its excellence in technical, further and higher education, research, knowledge transfer and community and industry engagement.

CIAO aims to achieve its vision and mission by:

  • Engaging with industry in the application of applied research knowledge in areas such as mathematics, optimization, informatics, data mining, simulation, artificial intelligence and information security.
  • Developing optimization tools based on new techniques to solve problems for industry.
  • Seeking and responding to collaborative and/or contract research initiatives with industry.
  • Conducting basic and applied research in mathematical analysis, in particular in optimization and statistics.
  • Conducting basic and applied research in informatics, data mining, decision sciences, computer games, information security and virtual reality.
  • Conducting quality training courses aimed at industry, government and business organisations, which cover specialised operations research techniques such as quality control, forecasting, risk management, process control and the use of optimisation software packages.
  • Attracting and training research students to work on basic research as well as industry related projects.
  • Publishing in international journals and publishing books.
  • Imparting new knowledge to industry, particularly through research linkages and partnerships.
  • Imparting knowledge to industry and commerce through dissemination and awareness programs such as workshops, seminars and mini-conferences.
  • Networking and collaboration.
  • Presenting papers at research conferences.
  • Interacting with other UB Centres and the Institute for Regional and Rural Research.
  • Measuring performance with an agreed Research Metric based on performance indicators.
  • Providing teaching informed by research.
  • Conducting a strong visitor program.
  • Publishing an Annual Research Report on activities.
