The
University
of Ballarat is unique in Australia, as a dual-sector regional
university providing a wide range of courses to 19,000 students.
The University has a national reputation for its responsiveness
to the needs of its students and the quality of its teaching
and prides itself on providing programs relevant to those
needs.
Ballarat is a growing centre for IT. Ballarat
Technology Park is situated on a 29 hectare site within
the campus of the University of Ballarat, and was developed
in conjunction with the City of Ballarat to provide a centre
for the region's burgeoning information technology industry.
Amongst the tenants of Ballarat Technology Park is IBM
Global Services Australia. Another tenant of the Park
is the Greenhill
Enterprise Centre, whose tenants include the Collaborative
Centre for eHealth (CCeH) which was established to focus
on research and development in the application of electronic
technologies for the delivery, access, education and co-ordination
of healthcare in Australia. CCeH is attached to the School
of Information Technology and Mathematical Sciences.
The
Centre
for Informatics and Applied Optimization (CIAO) is also
located within the School
of Information Technology and Mathematical Sciences, and
is one of four designated research centres in the University.
The main research thrusts are in applied optimization, software
engineering, distributed simulation, case-based reasoning,
knowledge based systems, data security, data mining in the
domains of law, health and economic modelling, health informatics,
information retrieval, mathematics and statistics education,
topological groups, and mathematical finance. Current projects
include the telecommunications, health, business and chemical
modelling industries.
