Greenhill Enterprise Centre, Ballarat Technology ParkThe University of Ballarat is unique in Australia, as a dual-sector regional university providing a wide range of courses to 19,000 students. The University has a national reputation for its responsiveness to the needs of its students and the quality of its teaching and prides itself on providing programs relevant to those needs.

Ballarat is a growing centre for IT. Ballarat Technology Park is situated on a 29 hectare site within the campus of the University of Ballarat, and was developed in conjunction with the City of Ballarat to provide a centre for the region's burgeoning information technology industry. Amongst the tenants of Ballarat Technology Park is IBM Global Services Australia. Another tenant of the Park is the Greenhill Enterprise Centre, whose tenants include the Collaborative Centre for eHealth (CCeH) which was established to focus on research and development in the application of electronic technologies for the delivery, access, education and co-ordination of healthcare in Australia. CCeH is attached to the School of Information Technology and Mathematical Sciences.

The University of Ballarat, Mount Helen CampusThe Centre for Informatics and Applied Optimization (CIAO) is also located within the School of Information Technology and Mathematical Sciences, and is one of four designated research centres in the University. The main research thrusts are in applied optimization, software engineering, distributed simulation, case-based reasoning, knowledge based systems, data security, data mining in the domains of law, health and economic modelling, health informatics, information retrieval, mathematics and statistics education, topological groups, and mathematical finance. Current projects include the telecommunications, health, business and chemical modelling industries.
