Mentors

The University of Ballarat employs senior students from your course to support you through your first semester. When you are enrolled in an undergraduate degree, you will meet the mentors during O’Week and learn how they can help you.

The role of the mentor is to welcome first year students to the School of Education and help them feel comfortable in their new learning environment.

Mentors are a reliable source of information and ready to share their own academic, cultural and social experiences. The sight, advice, and guidance they provide will be invaluable to you.

O’Week is an important time.

This week is your first week at university. It’s when you meet other students in your course, discover what expectations academics have of you, listen to senior students who will talk about their strategies for success, find your way around the campus, hear from teachers about their work, and enjoy yourself.

O’Week allows you to fit into the University, and be able to begin the first week of the lecture seminar with confidence, whether this means finding a classroom, the bus station or knowing who to ask.

First Week at University

You will have a timetable for all your classes. This will identify the unit, the time and location of the class. It will also show what sort of class it is (lecture, tutorial…) Normally you will have four units in your course. If there are less than four, check at the Education office to see why. Classes all begin on the half hour. You are expected to be there on time. For the first class take a notebook and pen. You will be given details of the unit and any textbook requirements. Look out for the mentors: they are there to answer your questions.
