Title: SMEs on ICT adoption and their value creation activities: A model for innovation in the agribusiness in Indonesia

Overview: Indonesia is a developing country with a strong agricultural economic base. According to Indonesian Agricultural Ministry and some researchers, more than 50% of the Indonesian labour forcework in SMEs, mostly in agribusiness that contributes 56.7% to GDP. Unfortunately, the improvement of this business sector has not been satisfactory. Indonesia also tends to import agricultural products from other countries such as Thailand and Australia. The challenge for agribusiness in Indonesia is to take address the expansion of globalisation and sophisticated Information Communication Technology (ICT), otherwise Indonesia will become a big market potential for some countries with little significant value creation occurring within the domestic economy.

The aim of this research is to analyse the value creation in adoption of ICT as an innovation management alternative.

The research question are:

  1. What is the market potential, locally and globally, for Indonesian agribusiness based on the use of updated ICT
  2. What are the obstacles to implement ICT for Indonesian agribusiness SMEs based on their resources and current competition?
  3. How does ICT innovation create value in the agribusiness SMEs?
Based on the research questions above, a model of value-creation on ICT adoption will be developed. Furthermore we expect from this research will give some following contribution such as (1) to advance the innovation management theory especially on agribusiness in the third-world economics, (2) to support the Indonesian government on decentralisation policy related to agribusiness SMEs, (3) to provide a guide for the relevant stakeholders involved with Indonesian agribusiness such as consultants, telecommunication companies, entrepreneurs on improving the use of ICT in SMEs.
