School of Business Advisory Board

The School of Business Advisory Board was established in 2002 under the initiative of Professor Julian Lowe, Head, School of Business.

Purpose of the Advisory Board:

  • To act as a sounding board for the School
  • To be a link between the business academy and the business community
  • To be a network to assist with linkages outside the University
  • As an ideas generator for potential new projects

The School of Business had made major strides forward over the previous 3 years, specifically:

  • Increased income by 75%
  • Established an active cohort of research students
  • Made significant improvements to undergraduate and postgraduate programs, creating a significant impact on demand and quality of intake.
  • Established successful programs in China, Hong Kong and Malaysia
  • Developed an entrepreneurial culture across a range of areas
  • Established a focused research centre – CRIC – The Centre for Regional Innovation and Competitiveness

Whilst the school was pleased with this progress, it wanted to maintain the momentum. It was suggested an advisory board, which might meet 3-4 times per year, would help, particularly in the development of future strategy.

The aim was to develop the School’s national and international reputation significantly over the next 5 years (2002 – 2007).

Topics for discussion and action at meetings have included:

  • Expectations of School of Business from an employer’s perspective
  • How reputation is gained and sustained in higher education
  • Graduate characteristics
  • Evaluation of data on enrolments in School programs
  • The Regional Business Monitor
  • Entrepreneurship in programs issues – opportunities for young Artisans; Family business & succession; Integration of Entrepreneurship throughout the programs; new entrepreneurship course
  • New grants
  • International Programs and China
  • School budget, enrolments, course modifications, School programs
  • New Management Consulting Package
  • 2005 School Review
  • 2005 Reviews of Undergraduate & Postgraduate courses
