A Message from the Head of SchoolHello and welcome to the Homepage for the School of Behavioural & Social Sciences & Humanities (BSSH). Over a number of years BSSH has received excellent reports in relation to student satisfaction to teaching and learning and the skills and practical knowledge taught within their courses. A feature of our courses is the flexibility and choices available within the range of discipline areas offered within the School. Students also have opportunities to take study options in other Schools within the University. To maximise student choice, the School offers many units in rotation, and has developed a number of interdisciplinary units that enable students to study a topic from a range of viewpoints. Two intensive summer school units are offered annually to enable students to accelerate the completion of their studies. I am proud of our experienced and well-qualified staff. They offer a stimulating and interesting program that explores the world and our place within it, and are dedicated and committed to providing students with excellent learning opportunities. Members of staff are also actively engaged in research, and we have several renowned researchers within the School. Students at undergraduate and post graduate levels therefore have the opportunity to work with highly regarded international scholars. BSSH has strong partnerships with community agencies, and student placements in local agencies are a feature of some courses. In any given year, the School places approximately 80+ students from courses in Psychology and Rural Social Welfare in more than 55 agencies in the region and beyond. We are also active partners in Pomegranate House, which provides psychological and counselling services for low income people with mental health problems in Ballarat and the surrounding district. Postgraduate students are often on clinical placement at Pomegranate House, and our staff provide some pro bono work, research and clinical supervision. In addition, the School has established the UB Psychology Clinic to provide psychological services for children and adolescents. The Psychology Clinic is staffed by postgraduate Psychology students under clinical supervision. These students are probationary psychologists, and enrolled in the Master of Psychology and Doctor of Psychology. Please see our website at http://www.ballarat.edu.au/ard/bssh/clinic/ for more information about the Psychology Clinic. BSSH is actively engaged in teaching and learning, research and in providing services for the community. It is a vibrant and exciting place to work and study. If you have further queries, after perusing our website, please do not hesitate to contact my office.
