Undergraduate Study in
Philosophy
Although you may just
choose to complete one or two philosophy units out of interest, you can
also choose to complete a full minor in philosophy. If you choose
to complete a minor you need to successfully complete at least six
units from the list below. (Note that units are offered on rotation,
please check the availability of units when you enrol.)
Strongly Recommended:
Advanced Units:
Completing
a Philosophy Minor at UB will allow you to develop a broad understanding
of the philosophical tradition, its primary movements and themes, and
key thinkers. The dual emphasis on understanding both the philosophical
tradition and what it means to do philosophy will enable you to develop
knowledge and skills in this discipline, giving you a firm foundation
for further study in this discipline if you choose.
Although
there are currently few formal prerequisites in philosophy at UB, we do
strongly recommend completing both
Philosophical Thinking and Logic
& Reasoning. The first unit will introduce you to the
philosophical tradition, and will develop your skills in reading,
writing, and doing philosophy. The second unit will develop your skills
in reasoning and argument, and will further provide a valuable basis
towards all of your further studies.
