Professor Frank Stagnitti is the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research). He is responsible for leading the strategic research direction and overall research quality and performance of the University of Ballarat. He is primarily responsible for maintaining and improving the University's profile in research, research training, and research partnerships. Professor Stagnitti also oversees intellectual property, research contracts, ethics, partnerships, joint ventures, commercialization and transfer of new knowledge.

Professor Stagnitti leads the $6 million Collaborative Research Network in Self-sustaining Regions Research and Innovation Initiatives.  He manages and is supported by Research Services.

He holds a BSc with first class Honours and PhD from Griffith University and a Graduate Certificate in Environmental Statistics from University of Canberra. Professor Stagnitti is an environmental scientist and mathematical modeller with research interests broadly in the field of modelling of pollution.

Professor Stagnitti has published over 150 journal articles, attracted several million dollars in research grants including three ARC large/discovery projects, seven ARC Linkage projects, and several ARC Linkage international projects. He has also attracted significant research funding from industry and other international research agencies e.g. Japan Science Foundation, OECD, Royal Dutch Academy of Science. Professor Stagnitti has participated in several large international collaborative projects (e.g. European Union 6th and 7th Framework projects on global desertification and water repellent soils and "973" Chinese project on Remediation of Contaminated Soils in Northeast China).

Prior to commencing his position at the University of Ballarat in July 2009, Professor Stagnitti held appointments as Chair of Academic Board, Associate Dean Research, Professor and Chair in Aquatic Science at Deakin University.
