Professor Andrew Smith is Professor of Management and Pro Vice-Chancellor (Schools and Programs). In this position Professor Smith is responsible for providing overall strategic leadership and management of the schools and programs of the university.

Andrew holds an MA in History from Cambridge University, an MBA from Aston University and a PhD from the University of Tasmania.

Professor Smith joined the University of Ballarat in 2008 as Head of the School of Business and Professor of Management. Prior to joining the University of Ballarat, Andrew held a number of senior positions at Charles Sturt University including Head of the School of Management, Head of the School of Commerce, Director of the Centre for Enhancing Learning and Teaching and Director of Research Development.

Professor Smith began his career in manufacturing industry in the United Kingdom. He held a number of positions in human resource management, training and development and organisational development in the aerospace and automotive industries before emigrating with his family to Australia in 1987.

He has conducted extensive research in the area of employer training strategies and the development of national vocational education and training policy. He is an acknowledged international expert in employer training policy and strategy and has won over 20 national competitive grants and published widely in international journals on aspects of training policy.

He is the author of the text "Training and Development in Australia." Professor Smith was Foundation Editor of the International Journal of Training Research from 2002-2009 and has served as a member of the Executive Committee of the Australian and New Zealand Academy of Management (ANZAM) and as an ANZAM Research Fellow.

In 1991, Professor Smith was a Research Fellow at the National Key Centre in Industrial Relations at Monash University. From 1999 to 2002 Professor Smith was General Manager (Research and Evaluation) at the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER). In this position he was responsible for the development and implementation of the national VET research strategy. He has worked with senior policy makers in VET at national and state level and served on numerous national committees in the vocational training area.
