The University of Ballarat is one of Australia's newer universities as well as the third oldest tertiary institution.
When Australia's first School of Mines was established at Ballarat in 1870 only two tertiary education establishments predated it. One hundred years later the Mount Helen campus was established as a tertiary division of the Ballarat School of Mines (SMB). After separating from that organisation in 1975 the 1998 merger between the university, SMB (and their Ararat campus), and the Wimmera Institute of TAFE (with campuses at Horsham and Stawell) once again linked the tertiary division to SMB.
Since that time, the University of Ballarat has focused on achieving greater educational benefits for the communities we serve in Central and Western Victoria, as well as other parts of Australia and overseas, and developing strategic strengths closely allied to the needs of the region.
From 2002, the University co-located visual and performing arts (TAFE and Higher Education) to the Camp Street Arts Academy. This site dates from 1852 when it was home to the goldfields police camp. During the second half of the 19th century many fine, permanent, civic buildings were erected including the police station, court-house, library, and post office. Along with two new buildings these re-furbished buildings make up the Camp Street campus and provide a dynamic and vibrant arts and cultural environment for the students of the University and the broader community of Ballarat.
