The University of Ballarat was established in 1870 as the School of Mines and Industries Ballarat (SMB), and was the first institution of higher learning in regional Australia.

In 1970, the Mount Helen Campus was established as a tertiary division of SMB and in 1994 the University of Ballarat was proclaimed. The ensuing four years saw the University merge with SMB (including the Ararat campus) and the Wimmera Institute of TAFE (Horsham and Stawell Campuses).

In 2001, the University co-located its Visual and Performing Arts (TAFE and Higher Education) at the Arts Academy in Camp Street, an historic goldfields site.

Today, the University offers leading programs in higher education, TAFE and senior secondary school education.  The University delivers its programs through seven Schools:

Nine campuses, significant partnerships with a number of national and international learning institutions, and a steadily increasing enrolment, the University continues to provide benefits, strategies and opportunities in education for communities in regional Victoria, and for a steadily increasing number of students from all over Australia and overseas.
