In recent years, increased attention has been given to the role of philanthropy in society in general and in Australian universities in particular. There is a momentum within universities to focus on philanthropy as a revenue source for a range of projects and initiatives which up until recently relied almost exclusively on government funding and other forms of grants.
In 2010 the University of Ballarat (UB) Council formally approved the establishment of a University Foundation to receive and accumulate gifts, bequests, grants and funds to help realise the mission of the University.
The Foundation was launched later that year with a $200,000 donation from one of the University's long-time supporters, Dr Wai-Man Woo.
The Foundation is governed by a Board who determines the strategies and directions of the Foundation, and provides recommendations to the Vice-Chancellor regarding the expenditure of the Foundation income.
The UB Foundation is a tangible example of how the University of Ballarat is seeking to assist potential and existing students, and to engage more actively with its alumni and the communities and regions it serves.
For anyone wishing to 'make a difference' the UB Foundation is about more than making a donation; it's an investment in the future.
History of UB
The University of Ballarat was established in 1870 as the School of Mines Ballarat (SMB), and was the first institution of higher learning in regional Australia.
