What is Counselling?

Welcome to the University of Ballarat's (UB) Student Services.

Since you may not have seen a counsellor before we'd like to tell you a little about what to expect.

The UB Counselling Service provides a free, professional and confidential counselling service to all UB students and staff, as well as family members of the UB community and prospective students.

Myths About Counselling

Counselling offers an opportunity to talk to someone in a supportive environment, helping people deal more effectively with their problems. We will listen to you in confidence without making any judgements. The counsellor will not try to guide or influence you during any session but will listen, help and support you as you work through the issues that you choose to talk about.

You may find this unusual to begin with; you may have come to counselling expecting to be told what to do or to be provided with answers. However, the counsellor is unlikely to tell you what to do. The counsellor's role is to offer you support and understanding.

The emphasis is very much on your experiences and developing an understanding of these, which will hopefully help you to find your own answers and your own ways of sorting out your difficulties.
