REEP Timeline
What is REEP?
The University of Ballarat is dedicated to increasing the participation rates in higher education of regional and rural students.
UB recognises that VCE results (or equivalent) do not always predict success at tertiary level and REEP is designed to enable secondary
students, upon the nomination of their school principal, to apply for alternative entry into one of UB's higher education courses. When students apply
through the REEP process they are assessed on their overall academic potential & demonstrated motivation to succeed rather than just their ENTER.
Who can apply?
You can apply if you are a current Year 12 student from a nominated school in the following regions and have the support of your principal: Central Highlands, Wimmera, Loddon Mallee, Barwon, Western District, Hume & Gippsland.
The program is also open to regional students from nominated schools in the Melbourne metropolitan area, NSW, SA and Tasmania. Visit the following link to find the full list of eligible schools and colleges:
REEP eligible schools 2008-2009.
Which courses can I apply for?
You can apply for any higher education undergraduate degree courses which do not have a range of special admission criteria such as interview, portfolio and audition. These courses are listed as 'eligible for REEP' in the 2009 VTAC Guide; a full list of courses is also listed here: REEP eligible courses.
How do I apply?
Full instructions and the application form are on the website but, briefly, the process is as follows:
You make sure you have the support of your principal
You apply for your REEP course through VTAC
Download and complete the official REEP application form
Hand the completed form and supporting documents to your REEP coordinator or principal
Your application can be sent in to UB from Sunday 31st August 2008; the closing date is 5 pm Tuesday 28th October 2008.
Put your REEP course as first preference in VTAC
Will there be quotas for the number of students offered REEP places?
The University reserves the right to place quotas on courses. Some courses are highly competitive and are likely to impose a quota on the number of REEP provisional offers made. However, if you and your principal believe that you can demonstrate the qualities of motivation and determination required to succeed in your course of choice, then you should apply.
How do I know if I am a good REEP candidate?
This program recognises applicants for their commitment to learning and motivation to succeed. If you can demonstrate:
Consistent average or above average performance in your studies;
Persistence & motivation;
A school or community involvement that reflects your course of choice,
Recommendation from your school principal regarding your potential to succeed at tertiary level
You are a good REEP candidate.
Will I be selected on the basis of my ENTER?
To receive an official VTAC offer in January, you have to achieve a minimum ENTER of 50, but to receive an early provisional offer you will be assessed on your overall academic potential and commitment to learning rather than just the ENTER. Your principal's recommendation is a significant part of the process.
What are the other requirements?
If you are made a provisional offer, you will need to satisfy any prerequisites and extra requirements. Check in the 2009 VTAC guide for the prerequisites & extra requirements for your course. You are responsible for making arrangements to satisfy those course requirements.
Interstate students are advised to check that they will satisfy course prerequisites before applying.
So that we can guarantee you receive your official offer, you will also need to place your REEP course as first preference with VTAC.
How many courses can I apply for?
You can apply for one course through REEP. If you are interested in other courses at UB, you will need to make a regular application through VTAC or make a direct application where this applies.
Which documents do the University want to see with my application?
Copies of your Year 11 reports and any Year 12 reports (including grades)
Your GAT certificate if you already have that
Any documents relating to contributions to your school and community, especially those that demonstrate your commitment to the REEP course you have chosen e.g. references from employers or placements, certificates for community service
Any documentation relating to additional qualifications other than VCE e.g. lifesaving, bronze medallion, coaching qualifications, TAFE certificates.
What happens to my application once it arrives at UB?
Your application will be acknowledged within 10 days of receipt at UB
The UB Selection Officers make their decision based upon the information you send them and the selection criteria for the Program. The selection criteria can be viewed here: REEP Selection and Administration Guidelines 2008-2009.
We will write to tell you whether you have been made a provisional offer by Monday 1st December 2008.
Why does my REEP course have to be placed first on the VTAC preference list?
In January 2009, at VTAC Round 1 offers, we will offer to all eligible REEP candidates (Minimum ENTER of 50; satisfying all the pre-requisites and extra requirements); however, if the REEP course is not placed first on the VTAC preference list, we cannot guarantee that you will receive your official offer for this course.
What is a provisional offer?
If your application is successful you will receive a provisional offer, which means that if you achieve a minimum ENTER of 50 and satisfy all the prerequisites and extra requirements for your course you are guaranteed a place.
What happens if I don't receive a provisional offer?
We receive many applications through REEP and selection is competitive. If you do not receive a provisional offer you become a regular VTAC applicant; if you are still interested in the course it should remain as one of your VTAC preferences.
I have a provisional offer through REEP but don't satisfy the prerequisites or extra requirements; will I still receive an official offer through VTAC?
No. You will not receive an official VTAC offer for your REEP course in January. You will need to follow the advice of your careers advisor or call our course INFOLINE on 1800 811 711.
I have a provisional offer through REEP but have not achieved a minimum ENTER of 50; will I still receive an official offer through VTAC?
You will not be eligible for your degree course through REEP but there are many courses for which you may be eligible. Contact the course INFOLINE on 1800 811 711. You can also look at: www.ballarat.edu.au/coursefinder or www.ballarat.edu.au/pathways.
Can I defer?
If you receive an official offer through VTAC for your REEP course (mid-January) you may apply for deferment from your course. Deferment is not automatic, however, and you must apply to your UB School. You will receive information about deferment in your enrolment pack along with your official offer.
Is REEP like a SEAS application?
No. REEP is not a special entry program; if you wish to have challenging circumstances recognised you must submit a SEAS application through VTAC.
I am an inter-state applicant, how will this affect my selection?
The same selection criteria will apply to you as to Victorian applicants; the same REEP timelines will also apply i.e. you will receive information at the same time. However, your state timeline may differ slightly from that of Victoria's. Follow this link to find the timelines for your state: REEP timelines for SA, NSW and Tasmania.
You will also need to pay particular attention to the prerequisites for the course you are interested in applying for. Please contact UB on 1800 811 711 if you require further information.
