What are the differences between TAFE and Higher Education?
TAFE courses are vocationally oriented, providing a great deal of practical/hands-on
experience during study. Job outcomes are at a paraprofessional level (middle
management/supervisory role). These courses range in duration from a few weeks (for a
short course) up to two or three years of full-time study for a Diploma or Advanced Diploma.
Higher Education courses can be either vocational or generalist, with job outcomes at a
professional level in the workforce. An undergraduate degree has a minimum duration of
three years of full-time study.

What costs are involved to study at the University of Ballarat?
University fees and associated expenses should be considered a life investment, not merely a cost.
At UB you are able to complete an internationally recognized course in a regional setting.
UB is world renowned for academic excellence and holds substantial industry partnerships right
around the globe, which is one reason why a considerable number of international students join us each
year to undertake study.
Fees
University fees vary depending on each student's situation. Many students ask specific
questions relating to the charges for their course. Some costs will be fixed, such as Student
Amenities Fee or Commonwealth Contribution amounts, while other costs such as accommodation
will vary depending on personal choice. The fixed costs associated with both Higher Education and
TAFE courses are summarised for you below.
HIGHER EDUCATION
The Commonwealth Government requires students to contribute to the cost of their education.
Students in a Commonwealth Supported Place pay a student contribution amount which varies depending
on the course and units chosen. These costs are based on the following 2006 fee structure.
Courses relating to Humanities, Behavioural Sciences, Social Studies, Foreign Languaages and
Visual and Performing Arts fall into Band 1 and charges vary from $0-$4,899.
Band 2 charges are $0 - $6,979 for courses including Accounting, Administration, Economics,
Commerce, Mathematics, Statistics, Computing, Built Environment, Health, Engineering, Science, Surveying and Agriculture
Law, Dentistry, Medicine and Veterinary Science are in Band 3 where charges vary between $0-$8,170.
Education and Nursing are National Priorities and attract the lowest charges, $0-$3,920.
If you are studying part time, pro-rata charges will apply. Full or partial payments may be
made at the beginning of each teaching period or deferred until you complete your course.
When you obtain paid employment that exceeds the repayment threshold (estimated $30,000 pa +),
repayments will commence through the taxation system. Further details can be found in the
HECS-HELP 2006 and FEE-HELP 2006 booklets and in the Request for Commonwealth Assistance Form 2006.
Call the Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST) on 1800 020 108
or Student Administration on (03) 5327 9564 if you require further information on Commonwealth Supported Places.
TAFE
If you are a TAFE student you are required to pay a Tuition Contribution, Student Services
and Amenities Fee and any materials costs at the time of enrolment.
These annual fees vary depending on the total number of hours you enrol in. The minimum
Tuition Contribution is $52 and the maximum Tuition Fee is $839 (excluding Fee for Service Courses).
A minimum Tuition Contribution of $52 applies to students in receipt of a Commonwealth Health Care
Card, Pensioner Concession Card or Veteran's Gold Card. Details are covered in the Fees and Charges 2006 Brochure, available by contacting your relevant UB campus.
It is recommended that prospective students enquire regarding the level of fees prior to enrolment.
Payment Plans for TAFE students are available. Fees can be paid in instalments (conditions apply).
Information relating to fees, concessions and refund policies and procedures can be
obtained by calling the following campuses:
SMB and Camp St Campuses (Ballarat) (03) 5327 8000

Ancillary Costs
In addition to course fees, other charges such as ancillary costs may be incurred.
Depending on the chosen course (whether it's Higher Education or TAFE) ancillary costs will be
different. For example, TAFE courses are likely to have more materials costs because they tend
to be more practically orientated. Remember to ask your Course Coordinator if there are any further
charges required to complete your course.
All Higher Education students are required to pay a General Service Fee.
This is used to fund a variety of academic and non-academic services and facilities.
The General Service Fee varies for part-time and full-time students. In 2006 the annual
General Service Fee for full-time students is $258.
Allowances should also be made for purchasing textbooks. Students
living away from home will need to allow approximately $130 - $150 per week for day to day living expenses.
