Why it is necessary to cite sources

Citing sources is necessary in academic writing because it clarifies ownership. It informs your reader when particular information is not yours but has been taken from another source. In addition, by providing details of the source, you are helping your reader to locate, verify and follow-up the cited information or idea.

If you do not cite sources where appropriate, you are being dishonest and may be guilty of breach of copyright or plagiarism.
