Oral presentations are given in front of an audience, such as your tutorial group. The following preparation guidelines will help to improve your confidence and benefit your performance:
-
Check the assessment criteria carefully.
-
Pay particular attention to prescribed time limits and scheduled dates and times.
-
Tailor the content and style to suit your audience and the context.
-
Anticipate any requirements (e.g., whiteboard markers, seating details) in advance.
-
If any part of the presentation is especially important, consider providing it as a handout.
-
Handouts or other printed material associated with the presentation should be free of errors (in the same way as any other written work) and should include the unit code and title, title of work, names of all authors, and the date of presentation.
Normally, presentation will be assessed as well as content, so be guided by the following:
-
Speak clearly and project your voice to ensure all audience members can hear you.
-
Speak directly to the audience using eye contact, rather than just reading from notes.
-
Be aware that you may not be heard clearly if you turn away to adjust visual aids.
-
Include title of the presentation and author's name at the start of any visual material.
-
Ensure that visual material can be seen clearly by all audience members.
-
Give your audience sufficient time to process any visual material.
-
Focus on delivering the main points, rather than presenting too much detail.
