Who
needs group work?
Many occupations rely upon teamwork and group participation
as a mainstay of everyday working life. People need to
collaborate on group activities in order to achieve the
"collective goals" of their organisation. Similarly,
many activities in which we participate necessitates working
closely with others. Being a member of a committee or
even a player in a team sport means that you will have
to conduct yourself in a way that promotes the objectives
of the group and supports all members' interests.
Why
have presentations?
Working on presentations provides an opportunity for
you to examine a topic in considerable detail and to convey
your findings to the other members of your class or tutorial
group. This is also an introductory opportunity for you
to engage in Public Speaking- a valuable communication
skill that will prove useful throughout your professional
life.

A
class presentation may require you to work privately or in a
group. Presentations from individuals are generally short and
involve fairly limited research (eg. a summary review of a chapter/paper,
a précis of a topic explaining the main points to the
class). In contrast, a group presentation might entail a large
project drawing together a semester's work or research.
This
worksheet assumes that the presentation is to be made by a group
although the basic steps outlined are identical for individual
presentations. Whilst the fundamental tasks involved are similar,
the added rigours of working within a group requires some special
consideration.
