Written Assignments

What Needs To Be Done?
One of the main types of assessment used at tertiary level is the Written Assignment.
It is essential that students learning in any discipline be capable of organising and expressing written ideas in a readable, grammatically correct format, using appropriate style, referencing and layout. Written assignments permit assessment of your capacity for analytical thought and expression.

This task can be a problem for those who have not developed practical skills in researching and organising material for written submission at tertiary level. Often science, engineering and technology students experience greater problems writing laboratory reports and academic papers because less emphasis may be placed on written expression in the study of scientific material.

Preparing written assignments involves a number of clearly defined tasks that include:

  1. Specifying the topic.
  2. Gathering information.
  3. Organising material.
  4. Writing the paper.
Researching the topic has a definite cycle that culminates in the final draft of your paper.

Each stage can be negotiated with a minimum of pain if students have a clear understanding of the tasks involved and allocate adequate time to cover each stage.
