Lectures and Note Taking

The fundamental goal of lectures is to present new material, ideas and concepts that have been chosen and organised by a lecturer so as to give students an overview of a particular topic area.

Every lecture has three main ingredients - the Lecturer, the Audience, and the Information that will be communicated.

The lecture provides an opportunity for a lecturer to contrast different theories and perspectives about the topic to many students at one time, and is therefore a very efficient means of imparting information. It loses its effectiveness when students are not prepared to readily comprehend the ideas being conferred.

Consequently your goal as a student is to understand the material being presented by the lecturer during the lecture. Therefore it is expected that you will take steps independently to familiarise yourself with key concepts before attending the lecture. This part of the process is not immediately apparent to students when they arrive at university.

A common misconception held by students is that only the material presented in lectures needs to be learned to pass a course. This belief often stems from high school where students are told precisely what they will need to do to pass the subject and only this material gets presented in class.

At University level the material provided within the lecture should not be regarded as the only source of information necessary for understanding the topic.

It is expected that students will supplement the lecture material through prescribed readings and text books in their own time.
