Independent Learning

I’m here...so now what happens?
The secret to tertiary success is derived from a healthy, authentic interest in learning new things supported by solid academic skills.

The purpose of this guide is to help you begin devising an approach to learning independently.

1. Who am I?
The reason that you are studying now is because of who you are – your Identity. Every individual is really a combination of many different people. In life, each person plays many roles and each role contributes to the everyday expression of our Persona - who we are (the word "persona" literally means "actor's mask").

Try to visualise yourself holding several balloons, each of which represents an important commitment in your life. Imagine the balloons have different sizes based upon their importance to you.

Possibly your image will look something like this...

Who Am I Exercise
Print out this page and answer this question in the space below by drawing yourself holding a balloon representing each commitment that applies to you. Try to "inflate" the balloons to reflect the importance of each commitment in the expression of your persona.

To estimate the significance of each commitment, try to imagine the balloon representing that commitment has burst! Try bursting each balloon in turn Á would your life be different? How? Would you be happier without this balloon? Is this balloon essential to your well being? Why? Too many balloons can quickly get out of control, can drag you around, and may even burst by themselves.

"In life, you must control the balloons"

It is important to recognise what you want to achieve for yourself during the time you are a student at university – this means clarifying your Expectations.
