Mission and Values

The mission of Human Resources is to enhance the ability of the University to pursue its strategic mission successfully, and to deliver high quality services to the Schools and Sections.

This mission is guided by a vision that sees Human Resources:

  • working in partnership with VCST and Heads of School / Section to develop organisational capability;
  • delivering services that are client focussed, innovative and operationally excellent; and
  • embedding the values of the University in its daily operations and aspiring to be a best practice HR organisation.

In pursuit of this mission the behaviours and practices of Human Resources will reflect the values of the University and be characterised by -

  • respect for others, ie:
    • acknowledgment of cultural, gender and occupational differences;
    • professional and ethical behaviour;
    • consultation with staff on issues which have an impact on their work or career; and
    • treating others at all times with dignity.
  • fairness, ie:
    • consistent and fair treatment of staff in similar circumstances;
    • clear and consistent application of merit principles in recruitment and advancement; and
    • everyone has a right to be heard.
  • excellence, ie:
    • excellence is rewarded;
    • staff are encouraged to learn and to develop;
    • success is affirmed and celebrated; and
    • staff are encouraged to provide high quality service and to achieve continuous improvement.

Culture

Human Resources believes that people are at the centre of the organisation and are its richest resource. We will work to develop a culture such that the way we do things reflects high performance and values based behaviour.

High performance means:

  • we are accountable for our actions;
  • we take responsibility and ownership for outcomes;
  • we are committed to the University and its strategic agenda;
  • we feel empowered to take control;
  • we look for opportunities to add value;
  • we are client focussed; and
  • we embrace change.

Values based behaviour means:

  • we respect ourselves and others;
  • we treat others with fairness; and
  • we strive for excellence.

Priorities

In the short to medium term the priorities of Human Resources are:

  • redefine our mission, structure and roles and to model values based behaviour;
  • influence the culture of the organisation through the roll-out of PRDP and development of line management capability;
  • identify and develop key organisational capability;
  • develop and implement innovative policies;
  • support change; and
  • progress other priority actions in the University, Portfolio and Section SSI.
